heat build up is no issue behind the quarter panels as they go straight through round the wheel arch into the boot. only the hardest driven least efficient amps would need extra air flow there - anything half modern would run just fine. this is an ideal place for cabling as the car loom runs under the sills and is held in with black plastic bendy clips - simply pull them apart, add the cables required and press them back home.

i've run some quite large amps under seats before now without cut-out problems. if memory serves there's a cut in the carpet under the seats (maybe for heated seats wires when fitted?) to allow cables to be run into the amps and back out.

to make a decent effort of cabling carpet removal is pretty much essential anyway.

FFS itss a cheapy 25£ amp, chuck it in there, if it fries,, then get another.... sorted...

and if your not playing loud, then you wont be using the full 60 watt, and if your after quality, then thats not the best amp??

if you willing to spend up to 200£, get a second hand genesis profile 2 amplifier, lovely and slim, mount it under the seat or something if you must, good ciculation, away from everything, slits already in the carpet to run wires through, and its a good sounding amp with not too much power,

can be had second hand for around 70-80£ (sometimes low as 50£ or high as 100)

edit:: i posted before reading page 2, lol i was gonna say what placey also sugeested, but if you wanted to use minimal wiring, and should you get into a prang, then atleast under the seat is still good...

Making me think now - maybe i should change my two little JL amps for a gensis amp (or two!)!!!!!!

Good call about putting the amp in the rear quarters - forgot about that option.

Okay guys - I've gonna bid this:

Let me know if one of you guys is bidding so we don't go head to head!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... Track=true

Also looking at this as it's quite small - is it crap? Anyone know about these?

Will it fit behind the centre - or are you putting it in the rear quarter now???

Looks cool - not bidding, but i'm thinking about changing a couple of my amps now!!

Not sure on the alpine tbh, but i think they're normally fairly decent!!

The Alpine V12's are good amps. I use a newer version of that, I can confirm that driving a set of components and a sealed 10" sub it runs pretty cool too.

I'll drop you some pics of what I'm going to be doing soon. I think we have similar tastes, less is more!

I run a sealed JL 10" sub in a small enclosure shaped to tuck up to the back of the boot, I don't think you'll even see it when standing above the boot. I am going to be installing sealed door builds too to replace the door pockets, I just can't stick the terrible standard speaker locations. They'll look pretty factory and it's all reversible.

Should be cool....

When it's done :?

The flat Blaupunkt active sub looks good - wonder if it fits under a seat...

Would be good to see some pics when it's done!!
Think i'm gonna have a crack at some sealed door builds in a couple of months!! I'm guessing mine will be slightly bigger than yours though - trying to fit an 8" in each door!!

I would have thought the rear quarter panels would be a good place for speakers. like the cabrio.

Would NEVER do it to mine but you know...

those alpine amps that you're looking at work well. if you have some patience i'd wait for a mrv-f407 to be listed - the updated and more powerful version of the one you've found - but excellent. you should be able to pick one up for 70-80 plus postage - and then they're proper bargains.

the genesis is quality and will inevitably fetch more money...

Still look out for better stuff but want to try something this WE.

the one you listed above is en entry level amp - ok but nothing more.

i have a couple of 2 channel amps i'd be willing to sell:

alpine mrv-t407 and mrv-t707. the 407 is supposed to be 40wpc but the birth certificate gives it 51 - the 707 is supposed to be 70wpc but it comes in at 87! the 407 is absolutely mint, the 707 is very close to mint, a slight mark on one end (not a dent or scratch, just a slight discolouration of the paint.) both are boxed with instructions and certificates etc. 40 plus postage and 55 plus postage respectively.

this range of alpine's is considered by many to be the best they ever made. they are very powerful and run pretty cool - no problems with cutting out. they are loud and very very clear indeed. they are my personal choice - i run 4 707s to very good effect. there's reviews on the web for them....

Hi Fellas,
My amp has always been in that position - however I am not sure it is too much to brag about - I think it is the original one - it is a very old Blaupunkt - as is the (ahemm :o: ) tape deck headunit... However one thing that I have had in the back of my mind when thinking of upgrading is if (and when) the heater core goes whether it will dump water onto the amp in that location...
Cheers, Tim.

see http://www.cardomain.com/item/ALPMRVT407 and http://www.cardomain.com/item/ALPMRVT707.

the 707 is getting on for a decent size, but it would fit behind a rear quarter panel. they are proper loud.

i might even have a punt myself and stick it in my work van...

I measured up the space - it's way smaller than I thought. Basically, I could fit something that's 22cm x 16cm by 7cm.

So I'm going for this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=006

If it sound crap, I'll have a think about something bigger in the quarter panels or hidden in the boot somewhere. Maybe in a carpet covered box or something.

These are the speakers I have at the moment - JBL GTO MK2's.
Image

Are these lame? Co-axial Carbon cone and Titanium tweeter.

I'm replacing them with these - JBL GTO 507 Components:
Image

What's better? Which is bettter amp'ed? The older one's are rated at 90W whilst the components are 55W.

Just won this amp:

Does this represent a decent deal? A bunch of you recommended Genesis amps so I went for this one - it's small and 2 channel; which is just what I need. If it doesn't fit in the place I've been looking at I'll probably sell it on.

Here's a better pic - think they retail at £150 ex-demo and £200 brand new.

It's a Genesis Profile 2.

That's a very good choice of amp 8)

They also have internal fan cooling which helps if you are hiding it under the dash etc.

Cool.

Does that mean you can hear it whirring away if you're listening to talk radio for instance?

One other thing, is it better to use the crossover built into an amp or use the crossover that come with the speakers?

Genesis amps have intelligent fans that only run when required. If you're listening to the radio, then the amp is probably not going to generate enough heat to require the fan to run, so you should not hear anything.

It's probably best to use the speaker crossovers if you only have a single amp.

Ian.
