i have a set of 17" alpina reps (i assume bk171's as there are 2 different pcd's and the replacement bk centreing rings i got fit)

there seems to be a different offset for the front and rear. (by about 20mm at a guess).

the tit who fitted the tyres (before i bought the wheels) has put 225/45/17's on the 'narrow offset' pair and 215/45/17's on the 'wide offset' pair.

i only noticed after bolting up with the 225's on the back and 215's on the front. the front wheels are filling the arches right up but the rears are sitting loads inboard......

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!

should the offset be like this or have i got bits of two sets?

Yep, sounds like you've got 2 sets mate, mine are the same offset all round on 215/40 17s and fill the arches nicely with no rubbing. You're right about the 2 PCD's, I've seen Bk171's on a Mk4 Escort.

i'm 99% sure that if i move the 215's onto the narrower wheels and the 225's onto the wider ones it'll all work nicely...

time to sweet talk the local kwik-fit!
