I was better around various corners and roundabouts, but on the straight the punto killed me really - got on top of my bootlid whilst i was in 3rd giving it everything - admittedly i slowed down for cars in front, but the emerald green bogey thing (punto) whipped past me in slow lane as if I were an anchored frigate in a harbour :(

Just wondered if i should think about e36 now even though e30 325i gets constant looks and i even once recvd an offer to buy my my car at some trafic lights!

I know these cars were never mega rockets btw

Where you from mate ? I ask coz theres a little chavvy Punto GT round near me that i always see in the colour you described. I know theres loads in that colour though. You really should be beating the GT's in your sport mate, Unless the fiat is modded !!!

Punto GT is turboed though, so you don't know how much boost this guy was running. My brother's mate used to have one and once he'd got himself a mega-spec head gasket he could wind the boost up to some stupid level and as a Punto doesn't weigh much it was very fast in a straight line. Never up to much round corners though, as you noted stenni.

Would an E36 be much quicker anyway, unless you got an M3?

I live in coventry, but i'm little concerned that my sport has lost a load of sauce if punto gt can take me. And I was kinda tryin'. However, a mate has told me that those thing are sub 8 seconds and can reach 138mph, so feeling less bad about my 17 year-old retro german car.

E36 higher spec motors are pretty awesome; m3 e36 will hurt any sporty saloon/coupe. Or at least it should!

The Punto is 1040kg, and 134bhp = 128.8bhp/ton STANDARD

The E30 325i has 170bhp / 1170kg (?) so that's 145bhp/ton.

I had a tuned Uno Turbo a while back: 165bhp / 800kg = 206bhp/ton! 8O

It was a £150 "runaround" Mk1 Turbo ie (which is the same engine as the Punto T but 1.3, not 1.4 and stronger). The Uno is about 800kg and was running maybe 165bhp at just over 1bar (say 1.1bar, std is 105bhp at 0.7bar) and a sub six-second 0-60 on my stopwatch. It was as fast as a local 295bhp scooby once it was moving!

CRAP car though, tries to kill you every time you drive it, and falls apart several times per day...

What an utterly stupid, mindless and feckless comment.

When this guy has owned a BMW worth more than £1000 I will take ridiculous comments like that seriously - be it narrow minded E30 zone bullshit or anything else. Absolutely absurd and somewhat offensive. :(

Did you mean something like this

The spec is as follows;

Model: T04E "P" Trim
Compresser: AR .50
Exhaust: AR .84
76 trim T350 turbine wheel (stage 5)
T04E housing 2.5" inlet 2.5" outlet
56 trim GT40 compressor wheel 2.41/3.22 (61mm inducer) and flow 65lb/min
Divided Turbo Flange

Going to be fitted to a Malachite Green 325 Touing sometime in the near future once all the parts are sourced/fabricated

The E36 was a cheap nasty design quickly produced by BMW in the early nineties in order to have a new model to sell on the back of the momentum of E30 sales.
In the eighties BMW could sell everything they produced and thought they could get away with the E36, as long as it had the badge on the bonnet. Trim quality on the first E36s was atrocious, and build quality not that hot either!

Your Cossie,Sandy's 3.2 evo(bigpimpin) and me should have a little get together for the purpose of "evaluation/comparison".

I wouldnt buy an e36 either.
Nothing against them but they just feel a bit poor in comparison. like brian says
trim isnt great, doesnt give the same natural feel of the e30.
PLus the fact I like my older cars.
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

i'm sure a slightly tweaked punto turbo could deal with a standard 325i. nothing to be ashamed of!

Odd how the E36 forum boys don't often make snidy comments about the E30. But they don't have much to prove, they've got a better car. winkeye

Here Here, I own a poverty spec e36 316i coupe on an 'R' plate and also have a mint 91 'H' plate e30 325i sport.
The e36 is by far superior in build quality compared to the e30.

I have always wondered why there is so many snidy comments on here towards the e36. Could it be down to bitterness because the e36 is indeed a much better car :duck:

Yes.

I don't hate E30's (far from it!) but the fact is, getting one that isn't a rusting, oil leaking piece of shit is increasingly hard work. Look at any road test from when the E30 was new and M3 apart (which in my opinion is just a breed apart from the regular E30) and you'll not see too many glowing references to it's handling. They weren't THAT great a car and there were better cars about (Alfa 75 3 litre would eat a 325i alive). All this 'E36's are shit' bollocks gets on my tits. As well as being factually very wide of the mark - if they are shit, what does that make the E30?

M50 in an E30? That's like a 1989 Grundig TV with a brand new remote!
winkeye

Just kidding.............. :D
