just masked up my rear lights to spray the indicators orange. they are now red but the effect is matt, they lack shine and therefore dont look like the rest of the lights, do people use laquer afterwards to put shine on them?

yes lacquer the entire lens with three or four good coats, then LIGHTLY sand flat with 2000grade (or 1000 if you cant find 2000) wet paper not for long, then get a soft cloth and some polishing compound (paste) and continiue polishing in a circular motion, finally finish with normal car polish.
you will see some areas come up better then others, so repoilish the bad areas with the poilishing compound, remember as with all polishing, use a light pressure and sand in a circular motion. it should take you about 15-30mins per lens.
alternatively get a poilsihing wheel and use that with the paste this saves time but i dont reckon it comes out as good

when you say lacquer the entire lens do you mean the whole rear light? and not just the indicator
