Whoever invented Open diffs needs to be shot

Just been out for a spin and its pouring it down with rain. I only went round my little town, but must have gone round 20/30 times then down to the local industrial estate

It wasnt very busy out so i felt like having some fun, kept going to certain junctions and spinning up,and getting the end out. But as soon as it came out it just jerked back again,and one of the times i must have been going up the road for about 20ft with just one wheel spinning, not the easiest to control!!



I NEED and LSD, no point in a 1.8 though,sadly

Tell me about it! Was coming on to a dual carriage way off a roundabout this evening in the wet.
Only doing about 45 mph and didnt even turn in hard or touch the throttle and next thing the back shoots straight out on some water! lol
I got it straight back in no fuss but as I wasnt expecting it at all at those speeds it shocked me a little!
Oh well, its all good fun as long as it goes right!
Its so hard not to power slide out of junctions up the road. lol

Thing is, cos i dont have much power, and an open diff its very hit and miss. Somtimes you can easily slide it if you already rolling and stick it in first then turn into the corner, somtimes it wont happen at all and you can just hear one whel scretching as you straighten out. Hence i went back 20 times Kept saying to myself "i can do better....i can do better"


Only thing is, somtimes it just comes out waaaay too much. Normally on flat corners you just give it some trottle and turn ,then let it slide through you hands when its comming out.
But i went up a slight hill junction turning right, and all the water had collected at the bottom (right on the give way markings) and i only floored it a bit and it shot round nearly doing a 180',ive done it before on that corner so i wasnt 'not' expecting it,just felt a bit uneasy as its dodgy as feck!

how much if that is down to lsd and how much down to suspension/tyres ???

The tyres arent great but I have to admit that being so low does make it slide easier as there is no roll in the suspension at all. The whole car just goes sideways instead.

I was trying to have some fun in rain today in red devil but it just spun and spun........Doooooog shit open diff!

They are a bugger to regain control sometimes without fish tailing down the road! other times they're fine!

Yeh i know mates, its a bit hit and miss. Hence somtimes i go round corners thinking "Yeh il just put my foot down and have some fun,just like i usualy do" then all off a suddern im on the otherside of the road.

Im sure if i had about 300bhp behind it it would maybe at least help to keep it going sideways But 4 pot wrongness+110bhp+opendiff =stay at home with a pot noodle and dont even bother!

I'm surprised how many sports cars have open diffs as standard. I think the Lotus Elise has one and the Ariel Atom and many others. I think they all have a LSD as an option but come with an open diff standard. It just doesn't seem right.

i think its something like the quaife gear type lsd...just a guess though


the lock is variable also

all i know is that it IS great for drifting etc...

Because, you know, the 2.3 has so much torque that my 4.1LSD probably won't be strong enough.
