To be honest, if it's been parked on grass, it may be worth stripping it for parts, which should amass enough money to buy a solid one. Once rust gets hold, it's expensive or terminal.
I had the impression last night that the only real concerns were the spec, the radiator with oil cooler piped to the oil filter housing and the front and rear valances.

May be worth throwing it at an MOT and just see what it fails on. If they write War and Peace, strip it. It has a high spec with plenty of tasty morsels to bring the money in. For £75 how can he lose...

not bad for £75 but ask that question again once all the cost of repairs has been added up

Agree totally with bmpaul. But if that's all you need, WOW, what a bargain.
Don't forget tickover will be lumpy if engine isn't standard.
You have PM

Has anyone on here seen the oil cooler on the radiator piped to the oil filter housing (different housing to normal)? Manual gearbox with, at a guess, an auto radiator...

Cheers

The front valance is a £15 bolt on repair, or £20 with a Halfords aerosol can. winkeye The rear valanxce is a welded part of the car so just repair it with fibreglass. The rad is from an auto. If it can be made to run and drive okay it could be one of those projects that takes more time and effort than money.

But straight away I can see an OBC kit worth £75 and some panels. You can't go wrong with that.

If you take into account its finished value as a tidy car with a fresh mot of £500 and then consider the chasm between its present state and it resembling a tidy car , i am sorry it is scrap, frag it and buy a decent one.

I guess it depends on what you want from it. I've just bought a 318i Touring on a J plate for £150. The red paint has faded badly, it's got a scabby tailgate, the door bottoms are bubbling etc. But, it cost me the grand sum of £39.40 to put it through an MOT (including test fee!), and is now doing sterling service as a daily drive. It's not worth throwing money at to make it look good (although I'll probably try and sort the paint fade), but it doesn't really matter to me. The guy I bought it from said he'd had a few people telling him to break it, but it's now got another life ahead of it.

That looks an absolute bargain whatever state it's in!
Any car that's been standing in a field for two years isn't going to look its best - that rear corner may have been just a bit of surface rust then, and BMW rustproofing is such that anything that wasn't rusted then, shouldn't be rusted now. It needs a thorough rust hunt to decide whether to save it or no.
Tailgate looks good from the pics, stainless exhaust(?), OBC, leather steering wheel ABS, electric windows all round, and that doesn't look like a 320 inlet manifold. Just a 325 manifold and TB, or the rest of the 2.5 still attached to it?
Needs work, but far from a scrapper, depending on the rust levels.
Ignore Pacerpete - He'd advise you to break a new E90 from the dealers!

Sorry Brian but i must disagree, where is the logic in spending a week of labour and lots of money in a doomed attempt to gold plate a turd ? the car is scrap, it's cosmetically a toilet, the inside looks like an irate pitbulls kennel and the under bonnet diarama screams 'stolen and sadly recovered'. I recently bought a taxed and tested 320 touring in diamond black with comfort leather for £200, yes it had/ has issues but it had 15" BBS, a westfalia towbar and other morsels and i drove it home. I am slowly sorting it while using it as my everyday scrapyard / tip turd .
These cars are hardly rare and my recent purchase is not an exception , there are lots more out there, so why waste money and time on rubbish ? Gaszman, rob its few morsels and frag it, with a bit of rubble in the boot it will weigh in to £75 + ! :)

Oh SHIIIIIIT! It's a 320i! In the Princess scene that's like resurrecting a 1700L rather than a 'full options' 2200HLS. :-)

Get it stripped and weighed, don't waste your time. Mint wings make £40 each, OBC kit £75, £50 for the head (or £100 if it IS a 325i), tailgate, coded bumpers, plastic sill covers, mirrors. Given time you could break that to £3-400 and use a load of bits to sort out something more worthwhile.

I believe Royalscratchcard is after some ABS bits.

i'd break it myself, and get the £300ish for the bits

i've got that dilemma with my beloved 316i that i've had for 8 years, its only problems are welding need in both front arches, 1 rear arch, both front wings and near the headlamps but it'd cost £300-350 to have welded up, but on old beemers you're always gonna be fighting a losing battle welding up a rotbox when you can pick up a very solid one for £600+

Good points made mate.
Really depends what it will cost to make it nice, cos in reality it ain't worth a lot, as you can buy a nice Touring for £5-800.
There's got to be about that much in bits, plus a bit, so be careful about spending too much on it. If all it needs is a few bits and plenty of labour, HIS labour that is, not bought labour, do it. If it needs a lot of bits and a bit of labour, strip it.

Depends entirely how rusty it really is! After standing in a field for two years the pics aren't going to show the true picture. Apart from the rear corner, there's nothing in those pics that makes me think it's a rusted turd.

If it's that rotten on the rear valance and has been sat in a field for 2 years there will be other nasties lurking. I may be wrong but...........

like said for £75 it's a good spares donor car for a shagged out touring with nice bodywork.

There's some serious time involved in getting that thing back on the road and in a decent state to use, thats just from what we can see in the pictures

Front jacking points fcuked, rotten brake and fuel pipes, a fuel tank full of shite, seized calipers, rusty discs - where does it end?

Forget it. I'd rather spend 200 quid more on something that has failed an MOT but which is still up and running and has been on the road recently.

The metallic green one in my sig does not have a trace of rust on it, and that one spent over two years standing in a yard with the rear hatch slightly open! Completely full of water when I picked it up, to the level where it drained from the floor into the sills and out through the sill drains. Wasn't interested in the carpets and interior trim, because it was the tan coloured stuff, but once it was all dried out you wouldn't know it had ever been wet!

Bit of a gamble, but it seems to have paid off.
Hope he enjoys it.

Have they considered a footy thug upset that his team got beaten? :D

More importantly, are we safe to come up on the 17th?

if your handy with bodywork u have space and time its not at all a bad deal. of course things are a bit different witht he value of these cars here. and we didnt get tourings so if it was me id probly get stuck into it. but being somewhat worthless over there i agree with whats said above.

get a welder make it structually secure f*ck how it looks get it goin and stoppin half decently lock the diff spray it matte black and go DRIFTING !!!!!!

Gaszman, sounds like your mate got a bargain to me. Maybe these cars aren't worth a lot in a slightly shabby state, but if you can get a car road legal for a couple of hundred quid, then that's cheap motoring. If it's something half decent to drive as well, then that's a bonus.

Image

My £150 Touring, or £195.50 including a years test!

Oh, and all of you who are quick to break a shabby but useable E30, take heed. These cars are going to fast disappear, so if you really care for them maybe it's time to save a few more. I'm a member of the Opel Manta Owners Club, and a few years ago club members were breaking cars left right and centre. Now there are less than 1000 left in the UK, this is from 18 years of production! The base model 1800 is especially rare, as this is one people cared least about (Hmmm, sounds familiar).

Why would you say ... Oh SHIT it's a 320 ... then the rest of the crap that follows ?
Not everybody here is going to install a K&N and think they can outrun a Boxster.

Fair play to him ... try getting anything over here for that kind of money when the scrappies give you 150 quid to turn a car into a metal oxo cube !!

By the way I'll take the OBC !!

The point i and others are trying to make is that ordinary e30s are virtually worthless (sad but true) in the U.K, so why waste time and money on scrap when something so much better can be bought for just a few hundred pounds more.

This week i got a lead on an allegedly very low mileage minty 325 touring with tax and test for £500. I hot shoed over to check the turd, and yes it was tidy, it did have new brakes, tyres and exhaust, a nice sony cd player, working headlight adjust !!!!!! and a few other positives BUT it had 9 owners no history bar 4 mots , a few scabs , a heavy clutch and poverty spec. I walked because i knew the mileage was not kosher and by the time i had got the car to what i would consider a good standard i would make zero profit, possibly even a loss on resale :(
This car was better than 75% of the scrap that people here pump money into and could be bought for £500, where does that leave gazsman and his turd ?
