the sound is so annoying, i thought it was my handbrake shoes so i got them replaced and my diff, and the freakkin noise is still there.
Someone said to me it might be my bearing but i know the sound bearings when they go its a low tone sound.
Nelly pointed out the brake disc shield and bearings but i have a feeling its the brake disc thingy. They havnt rusted to pieces yet because they look all there and not that britle.
ok wot i will do then is check in the gap first to see if there is a stone jammmed in between and if not gonna bend the shield back away from the disc.

Hi,
I was just wondering if you did actually find a solution to this noise. I have a similar thing. Its coming from the rear passenger side. It is unaffected by braking or clutching in and out. It is only motion based i.e. as the car speeds up so the noise increases. I also find that it is affected by going round bends. Right hand bends the noise disappears and on left hand bends the noise increases.
Its a very light whirring tinny sound which makes me think it coud be the dust shield.
Any update?
Thanks
Tom

I checked the brake dust sheild and it looks normal, and no i have not sorted this yet. I dont get any change in noise when i go round bends the noise stays the same just gets louder when i accelerate.
At the next Ace Cafe meet i want to get a few peeps to have a listen and see what they think, whos the best clued up e30 mechanic that may be able to help me. Only person that comes to mind is Nelly.

Hi,
I have had the rear wheel off and checked out most of whats in there. The dust shield doesn't seem to be in contact with the disc and the pads and disc seem fine.
The noise is still present and I'm concerned that it might be a wheel bearing but I really don't think it is as the noise isn't intrusive enough.
The break pads have approx 4mm of pad left on them. Is this ok? How much thickness do brand new ones have? I'm wondeing if the pads maybe have those wires integrated into them that squeel when the pad wears down?
The puzzle continues.

Hi,
Yeah I have done that and the only noise I can hear is a faint noise from the handbrake shoes inside the drum part of the disc. Based on this I drove along and when the noise was happening I pulled up the handbrake gently to see if it affected the noise. It didn't.
The only thing that I'm thnking now is that it might be the prop rubbing on one of the shields under the car. Unlikely but I did replace the exhaust recently and there is a possibility that one of the shileds got knocked or moved. It would stand to reason considering the symptoms and what I've ruled out.

Sometimes the backplate holes can rust and the clips holding the handbrake shoes against it fall out.
And rolls around inside making odd rubbing sounds..
You'll need to study the back of the plate or whip the disk/drum off to check.
When are the E30 ACE meets?
