Hi,

I'm hoping to scrap an old '83 Mini Metro bodyshell that has just the basics to enable it to roll, it has a numberplate, but to 'officially' scrap it, do I need the registration document (V5)?

I've noticed a number of operators advertising in my local rag who claim to offer a free collection/scrapping service (presumably now that the price of steel has gone up due to Chinese demand) - would they be happy to collect an engineless shell do you reckon?

Thanks!

Funnily enough I scrapped an engineless E30 today!

Yes, you need the V5 for them to stamp and sign. I reckon they get paid to collect cars by the council or something because they were straight round (less than 30 mins) to take this one away!

Just send off the bit you need to from the V5 and you're done, conscience clear :D

I scrapped a car without the V5 - I agreed with the salvage guy that I would notify the dvla as the v5 had not arrived for the car. I then contacted the dvla, and they told me just to send a letter with the cars details and date that it was scrapped - job done!

agreed, i did the same as cava a while ago.

i have always done a quick letter to the dla too, just in case there is any comeback from pikeys. it has been known around here for money to be charged (no questions asked, regardless of whether the car has a logbook), then it is dumped in some farmers gate! YOU are then responsible! not what you want to find out!

if the people who take it are unknown advertisers in a local rag (mobile number only etc) make a note of the number plate, just in case!

No scrapyard I have ever been to has asked for the V5 - nor the guy who collects my old shells. They don't give a shit as it's going to be weighed in and crushed.

I'd have said the same until recently - have started insisting on the V5...

Thats right.

They dont give a wank. I scraped an early sport the other day(one less on the road innit boyz).

Struck up a good conversation about beer drinking with the scrap bloke as he perched the thing on top of a burnt out golf on the back of his hiab. No V5 conversations here....

Strange. I thought you were Welsh.

Good news though - another rotten heap of D reg shit off the road and converted into £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£. There should be enough sound metal in that for a kettle and a George Foreskin Sandwich maker.

The scrapyards I go to still don't care. Not like a 1983 Metro has had any kind of value the last 20 years to warrant ringing one.

Hurrah! I'm almost gald to be letting an Austin Metro be converted into some El-cheapo sh*t by the Chinese, even if the poor old planet does suffer! :P

if you're unlucky (especially if they have no identity when taken away) they will be registered to you though! get those letters off to save an argument when a tax fine turns up! :D

Yeah, good thinking dude. Maybe I should just leave it dumped by the roadside and save all the aggro

Not if I remove the plates and make it unidentifiable...then put in a call to the council claiming that there's a 'blot on the landscape'.

Yes, I'd like to do it legit if poss - but the officialdom makes it all so hard sometimes to achieve anything in a straightforward manner

Yeah guys ive been reading this & i agree sometimes it is difficult to do things like 320iSE said in a stright forward manner. There a law on top of another law ! But if u put your mind 2 it u can do anything ! :)

It's really not difficult at all!

You call your local breakers, they send a wagon around, you sign the V5C over to them and post off section 9.

Job done.

Not complicated.

Doesn't cost a penny.

It took less than 45mins from the phone call to easily and legally dispose of this shell I had kicking about!

Here they take the whole V5 and give you a caertificate of collection, then within a few days you get a confirmation of disposal caertificate from DVLA. But the company I use are licenced by the DVLA and probably get tonnes of grants for doing it.

The vehicle in question has been festering in a garage for years, and AFAIK isn't delared SORN - it was taken off the road before that nonsense came into being. Will this be likely to cause problems with DVLA demanding back tax, etc?

With it being a mini, small/rust etc, and just a shell, its not going to raise much cash at the iron merchants, scrap man may want paying to come out to it, if it was me however I would get the 9 inch grinder out and put the thing in the back of a transit :D

As for the paperwork, just use the phonebook to help fill it out :)

As Dan says - bung it in the boot.
