i've got some spare grilles and as mine keep going grey, i'm thinking of spraying them satin black.

has anyone else doesn this?

what is good for removing any traces of silicone? luckily the spare ones i have are from a very unloved 318i and have not had silicone anywhere near them in years but i do want a quality result, if possible

use some sort of alcohol cleaner the type body shops use before spraying cars.

the before spraying them use some adhesion promoter and then spray them

you need some spirit wipe, thats what bodyshops use, it stinks like cat p!ss but does the job!!

I would use a bit overy fine wet and dry to ever so slightly rough the srface but I am sure many a zoner here just sprayed straight away with no prep.

if you want the spray to stick properly use adhesion promoter. this means if the grills get scrathed the paint will scratch and not crack and then peel and start getting messy

if you use these products there is no need for sanding. this is how my grilles were done and they look great

Don' t bother with plastic primers or adhesion aerosols, just give the grills a good key ( scratch it ) with some

red scotchbrite or green stuff you wash dishes with, if you ain't used silicone products for a while then you

shouldn't get silicone problems, you don't have to use fancy spirit wipe if you do get the odd silicone then just

hold the aerosol a bit further away and dust the colour on 9/10 times fills them up and stop reactions.

for the money adhesion promoter costs its worth the money. saves you buying more cans of paint from when they start to crack over time. £7 for a big tin, and im sure you will be able to find it in smaller quantities for cheaper if you look around. it also saves you scrathing away at the grilles so its bound to leave a smoother, stronger finish on the plastic

True sam i just posted the cheap option not sure how much gareth wants to spend, you can get cheap plastic

primers from halfords & brown brothers that will do the trick.

thanks lads, i'll have a look at what's available locally.

hopefully it'll be fairly easy to achieve the finish i want as i'm not going for a glossy coloured finish like most plastic spraying jobs, just a fresh matt / satin black finish that doesn't go grey!

To spray mine, I simply washed em in the sink with some fairy liquid, and just sprayed em. Didn't even bother to rub em down. Haven't had any problems yet, just a quick spray over every 6 months or so to cover the stone chips, and jobs a good un
