e30adam's z3 quickshift article lists all of the parts required for a conversion and also the full refurb of the linkages. i've got the whole lot on order but could use a guide on the whole job. what takes the extra 8 hours mentioned?

as it a gearbox out job to take up this extra time?

The 8 hours is taken up by replacing the selector rod bush. It requires removing the exhaust system, propshaft and dropping the gearbox to gain access. Not difficult, just time consuming. I could probably do it in half that time now I'm well practiced at taking E30's to bits!!

You can change just the shifter in about 30 minutes but will stiull get a bit of slop unless you change the selector rod bush.

thought that would be the case! i have got 3" total side to side movement and 1.5" front to back movement... that's while in gear! it's like stirring a bowl full of potatos!!!!

if i remove the gearbox mount, split the exhaust at the clamps under the gearbox and remove the prop, will the engine and 'box tild down enough to get access? or does the box have to be completely removed? (eg, "dropped")

cheers adam

Gearbox can stay in mate, just need to drop it a couple of inches so you can push the holding pin out and get your fingers over the top of the 'box.
