I was given a 325 engine, having spent last night with it in the boot of the car (and managing to convince a drunk person that it was hooked up and the car was twin engined and 4x4) today was the day we began the heart transplant.

Some pics.

Old engine.... piss poor 1.6, 101 bhp.
Image

Woops, this is what happens when your car falls sideways while on a bmw jack. We had someone drop over a trolley jack after this.
Image

Big hole. It took us 2 and a half hours to get to this stage. Half an hour of that was waiting for the jack.
Image

ride height back to standard.
Image

One of my mates working while I stand around and do not much. I seem to be looking at a wall for some reason. This is pretty much how it goes when i do work on cars, they wouldnt let me do anything in case I broke important things. I make a mean cup of tea though and can pass you spanners like theres no tomorrow.
Image

New engine being a complete bitch to get in.
Image

Fan and water pump pulley removed and lots of shoving and grunting later..... 2.5 litres of free inline 6 beauty. Behold the knackered 325 lump, it brings more power!
Image

It took us 5 hours to get to this point. We hooked up the electrics and it turned over. Then decided 5 hours work was a bit much for one day and downed tools.

Tomorrow we will make it work.....

umm... not sure. It runs ok, but the guy we got it from said it had overheated and smoked a bit, possibly a head gasket but it passed the blue bubbly water test thing...

When we ran it in his car though it didnt smoke or overheat so it may just have been that when he got it the car had been standing for ages.

Good work mate :)
Are you changing the diff too?

Oh and you may want to change the front springs for 6 cylinder one too, assuming they are 4 pot ones that is?

Not changing the diff until it breaks or I find a 325i sport lsd. I have the 325 one ready to go but it seems pointless putting it in, by all accounts the 316 one will hold up, and I kinda want to weld it so I can see what all the fuss is about. Will be good to do it to this one so if it turns out to be a mare I can put the 325 one in.

The suspension will be uprated but I think I'm going to see how it goes on these while I save up to actually spend some money on it (shock horror!) and buy a full set of uprated shocks and springs.

Simian assuming the diff is a 4.45,which im pretty sure 316 tourers are, then itll fly of the line, proper sleeper then winkeye
Wont do your top speed much good but itll be very amusing for you!

I had 4 cylinder springs on mine when i first fitted the M50,only drove it to the bottom of the road to test drive it and the front end was horrendous, bottoming out non stop and definately not good for the sump :?
Sat lovely though winkeye

Good luck for tomorrow, keep the pics coming, looks like you get plenty of time to use the camera while everyone else works?

to be honest, with the springs I have in now its pretty much on the bumpstops anyway and as bouncy as hell. Ride quality is horrendous and I wouldnt like to find out what happens under hard cornering, the sump is about an inch off the road but I have two spare ones. Thats why I'm saving up for proper kit. I want this ride height but without the hellish ride.

I've been told about the effects a 316 diff has on a 325 and am looking forward to finding out for myself 8) Top end with this ride height and quality isnt too important, unless i'm on a new road surface I'm a bit nervous doing anything much more than 60 anyway :o: but getting there quick will be fun 8)

Gaffa tape is like "the force" - it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

Mate, I still have my original diff, and acceleration is wicked! Tops out at 125mph though, but being an A road racer, it's not like it get's up to those speeds that often!

finished!!!

I didnt get any pics. Tightening jubilee clips and attaching plugs I can do so I had to actually help today.

But, this should say it all. http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n128 ... V00001.flv

It only has half an exhaust currently as it got dark before we mounted the back half, but christ it sounds good!!! I nearly gave some poor old lady a heart attack I think.
snoops wrote:lol with the 4.45 diff what will economy be like?? :o :o
fuel economy? whats that? I'm sure I've heard the phrase before but must have dismissed it as un-important.

Maxfield - yes, it does get to 60 rather rapidly :D

Stonesie, I think I'm going to take the i off the end and put it where the 1 was.... to the casual onlooker (and the aforementioned chavs in saxo's) it will still say 316. But I will know it says 3i6 winkeye

There are some teething problems, its over heating but my mechanic friend reliably informs me its probably (hopefully) an airlock. I dont have the dash modulator thingymabob from the other car yet so the dials are a bit all over the shop too.

cheers eko.

I forgot to mention that when we took it for a test run the idle control valve thing had a split hose so it kept cutting out, as this video shows, but its fixed now and purring away nicely at idle. Insulating tape is great. I firmly believe no engine bay should be without some insulating tape and a bit of gaffer tape thrown in for good measure.

my mates no tarantino though so dont get your hopes up.

Ive got a coding plug here but cant remember if its 4 or 6 pot one.

if you like it in that vid you should hear it roar at full throttle! 8)

Its really very easy to do... just remove the back section of exhaust! lol.

I'm tempted to just make up some pipe so it comes out the back of the car (and is therefor legal) and not bother with a backbox....

yeah I know :( I dont think the wife is too impressed with the noise either lol!

It would be very nice to leave it as is, I love loud cars when they actually sound good (not like some crappy 1.2 with a 5" 'jap can' on it) but I dont want to be pulled over every time I go out.

I think a compromise can be reached though, so I still have the grumble and roar but slightly muted and not have issues with no backpressure as has been mentioned. Time to go and sweet-talk my local friendly ss exhaust makers into giving me a freebie.

it will make a big difference a 3.5 with a 1.6 diff you can forget about using 1st gear and maybe 2nd,3rd, but it would be one hell of a burn out. :D
