Is it possible to remove the carbon canister on the e30 or can you put it somewhere else it is getting in the way on the s50 engine mount, does anyone know what the chrome thin pipe does that goes around the back of the engine on top of the water pipe thanks.

I'm assuming you have an emissions equipped E30, and are referring to the fuel tank vent canister.
95% of UK E30s don't have this canister, and the pipe from the tank can be disconnected and tucked into the turret reinforcement. The hose to the inlet manifold will need plugging on the original engine or the s50, and the solenoid valve, or an equivalent resistor will need to be fitted to keep the ECU diagnostics happy.

brian's right, it can still be removed. I've heard of plenty of people who run without it. It was added in '87 (along with cats) to help emissions.
My e30 m3 doesn't even have one (but it's an 86 non cat model)
