I plan to upgrade the ice when i get my conertible. I have the amp, M44 PG. I plan to use the standard front speaker location, but fill the space behind the speaker with sound deadening material. In the rear i plan to fit the 2 5" focal subs under the roof housing.

Any pics of convertible boot installs. I plan to keep the car looking standard as poss in the boot.

Sounds like a good idea! do you know if them focals are any good, i might have get some.. wasnt so sure about subs in my cab, but didnt think about smaller subs under the roof compartment..

I am having an install in my Cab. in mid-Feb. My requirement is that I can still use my boot for shopping, spare wheel etc. will post some pics up when it's done.

At one of the shows this year, I did sell a custom sub box that fitted under the roof in the boot but did not extend into the boot. The amp and CD changer were mounted behind it and it allowed the boot to be used no problem.

I had a set os mission speakers in my Corrado. Whe i sold it and got my first E30 M3 i went looking for the mission speakers and found they had stop selling them. I was advised on focal's as they were some of the best on the market. I was very pleased with the sound they produced.

not exactly what you are intending but this was my idea to get the biggest box but still have some use of the boot. the sub is a 12inch and required 3 cu.ft box to get the best out of car response (which is essentially what you have with the roof open) but 3 cuft is huge, so i went for an angled box as you can see with a 4x13inch port which fires to the side of the box not visible in the picture, the box is just big enough to be jammed in the under boot space, so it does not vibrate. the amp is mounted to the box with enough slack cable to remove the box if i need the spare. another tip is to run the amp from the 12V supply that runs your rear window blower. i junked the blower, shorted out the micro switch under to roof frame and i can turn the sub on and off from the demister switch (good for dodgy areas), plus the input leads do not have to run parallel to the supply wires for verylong - cutting out noise.

as for boot space i can get my wakeboard and a rucksack in there, or quite a bit of shopping, or if need be i disconnect and remove it to get the full boot.

as for the sound it is bassy enough, in fact more then the midrange can cope with due to the inability to fit decent mid-sized speeakers in a cab without modification to door etc.

I have a friend of mine who owns a car hifi shop and he's suggested that since no one ever really sits in the back of my car, we build a pair of 6" subs into the rear floor (behind the front seats).

Effectively, from the outside you won't see anything, except a suspiciously shallow rear floor as the subs would be under acoustic carpet.

Each sub would be basically housed in an individual box. However, it's still only an idea and we've no idea if we can get enough space to accommodate them. Let me know what you guys think anyway, would be good to get your opinions.

Not a bad idea. I have a pair of 5WS focal 5" subs and would work in my car. I will try the boot under the roof section first and then if this fails will try something else

I've never actually heard a cab with small subs in the boot so not sure if it'll work??? Personally, i think they'd struggle to get the bass through the armour plating BMW call a back seat!

Let me know how you get on cos it would be interesting to find out if it works, cos if it does, i might just spare the rear floor!!

take a look at alphasonik subs and amps the bass they kick is amazing on there 100 series im looking at the 400 series for my e30

That's effectively what I've got, except mine are pioneer tubes. Really easy to remove & they actually sound good! I used to have an infinity 12" sub in a big ported box in the boot, but it's so much more efficient to have your bass coming from right behind your seat!

It will be a nice little project for me. I need to get the interior out to run the cables. I wish the battery was in the boot like my M3.

I'll let you know how i get on. These little subs are supposed to be very powerful for their size.

Gouki's system is a very good idea. At the moment, that's the layout i am going for. My 12'' is in there at the moment and sounds good, but occasionally, i'll need to put a pushchair in there so i'm going to build a false floor. This is possibly the best layout if you still want a functional boot.

You lot re missing the point. Which sub you can go for will depend on how much space you have to play with. Som subs work well with little space and som need massive space to deliver. I have 2x10" West Coast Custom subs in my E46 and the kick arse, but dont take any of the boot space at all cause the box is so small it slots under the hood cover leaveing the whole boot free.

My E30 however is s different story Cause of the crap accoustics of the E30, if you wnt proper pouding sound then you have to be prepared to sacrifice the space in your boot. Just get the Missus a bus pass for when she goes shopping

sub itself is roughly in the centre of the wheel well. The wheel well is acting as an enclosure for the sub. The false floor is sealed to the floor. I haven't tried the system out properly with the roof down but with the roof up it sounds fine when your playing tunes and going along.. Plus you have the luxury of space in the boot and I can upgrade the Sub and Amp easily at a later date if I want more power!
