Made some mounts and fitted the water cooler in the front skirt today

The cooler in place
Image

this is the grill from a 325 sport but the shape made it sit alittle to close to the cooler so i cut it down with a band saw until fitted correctly and let the air flow around the cooler.

cooler grill cut down

and the cooler and the grill in place looking from underneath

Lookin neat Matt, you'd never know it wasn't standard, you'll be leaving some shocked people at the lights with that

Also see http://www.enginehistory.org/model_engines.htm for an idea on how to cut f***kin hundreds of fins with minimal fuss and indexing, click the Bristol Aquila (the Eagle22 is even more impressive but less relevant). Works well for short items but you might need large dia saws to slit a long bar :?

It's called a Striker and made by Raw Engineering, it used to be a Sylva design but they sold the rights.

Spec is:
Engine - '03 R1, chopped and baffled sump, otherwise standard.
Suspension - Double wishbone all round, no ARB
Dampers - Nitron custom made, inboard at front
Drivetrain - R1 6spd sequential, Quaife reverse transfer box (oil spitting pig), 3.38:1 7" ford diff with Quaife ATB, resiliant tube propshafts, custom lightweight driveshafts.
Brakes - Willwood Powerlite 4pots, Sierra cosworth rear, soon to be swapped for '04 R1 front calipers, 9mm solid disks all round
Weight - Estimated 420Kg wet

420kg!!! 8O nice! :D

the dash looks sweet by they way (apart from the wheel :D ). if you finish it off and need some supersexy looking labelling for the buttons, CAD up a design and get someone like tecan ( http://www.tecan.co.uk/core/ ) to make you some up. they can photo etch a design into some stainless steel sheet (like 0.2mm deep matt finish into 0.5mm mirror finish sheet) and cut them out all using a photochemical process. this would look the poodles plumbs!!! one sheet of stainless put through the process will set you back near £100 though so cheaper labels do have their appeal!!!

Try this for BMW eaton charger on a BMC mini

LOL to think I was worried mine might have a 1 or 2mm step in it where it meets the SC if I'm not careful.

Progress is slow at the moment. I've made a new bellcrank for the gear shift and located the dump valve (where the battery was :x ) but I'm waiting on a new rosejoint before the bellcrank can be tacked in place and I can start on the inlet properly.

You got anywhere with your inlet duct yet Matt?

My big worry at the moment is management, I'm starting to lean toward a second rail and Megasquirt assuming I can get one addapted for non wasted spark coil on plug ignition :?

Ants the man to talk to about the megasquirt, think you might struggle though as i think they use alot of ford parts and the 60 -2 tooth setup.

not much progress on the inlet side of things as ive been strippin the engine and sorting out all the new parts i need plus cleaning and degreasing them all. made a second plate today which will bolt on to the back of my S/C in let to TB plate so that i can graft the bend on to that plate which means i can remove it as and when i need to. it also mean if it doesn't work i have'nt scrapped the first plate which tuck quite along time to make, grinding through stainless with a rotary burr to make the nice curvs of the Inlet/TB joints takes ages.

got the material to make the laminova tubes yesterday so i think the next job will be to make up a drawing to work from as they are going to be reasonably complex in design. :D

Cool, can't wait to see how these coolers look.

I got my bellcrank tacked in place tonight so now I can get on with the inlet ducting. 3 days work and the whole thing has moved ~1/2" hardly seems worth the effort... infact it nearly got binned in disgust when I accidentally tried to weld my finger tip to it :x Ouch.

Making the duct seperate from the plate sounds like a good idea, should make the clay easier to pick out at least.

jk

there is a specific MS for Motorcycle use, its a bit cut down but would run your bike Tb's and Turbo setup quite happily driven by the stock CDI ignition setup.

Cheers Ant,

I'll look into it, do you know what they call it? My big issue is running coil on plug ignition that isn't wasted spark. Wasted spark is a serious explosion risk if I run an extra injection rail 8O

any one got any idea if its ok to run the camcover breather back into my inlet before the Tb so it still under vacume like normal?? just wondered if any of the oil came through if it would damage the S/C or eat the teflon coating on the rotors? :?

I could get a stainless one made at work its just am gonna be struggling for space and not to keen on having lots of pipes dangling round fast moving pullys/belts, if the worst happens i might get a drain put back to the sump and then a "t" inline to provid the vacume.

or could i put it on the engine side of my manifold and have a non return valve on it??

^ Not sure that would work.

You need a setup like whats found on the S14's

Is there some kind of non return valve in that S14 setup to stop crankcase pressure forcing sump oil back up into the inlet or does it just rely on the height difference and the cam cover breather to keep crankcase pressure down?

Looks easy to copy if that's the case

think that must go to the inlet tract so as the the engine causes a vacume it will also make a vacume in the rocker cover???

I think it goes to the bottom of the inlet plenum where oil might collect from the crank case brether fumes, the plenum is at a slight vacuum due to the drag of the air filter.

when the engine is under boost, there is positive pressure inside the crankcase which must be vented , otherwise the oil will literally be blown out of the seals.

So the catch tank came into being, the oil vapour will be vented to the tank, the pressure is then vented to atmos through a vent, the oil proper, will be collected @ the bottom of the tank and either returned to sump( need a check valve to return only under low load vac conditions), or manually drained as and when applicable.

no real issue with venting the r/cover breather to atmos only, does the job if you can live with the faint smell of oil when sitting in traffic :?:

 wish mine was only a faint stench in traffic :D

My mate's car with a catch tank didn't seem to stink quite so much, guess the fumes condense on the inside of the tank or something.

Why oh why did Buick build that engine?!

You all owe it to yourselves to go out and find a car with a 90degree V6 engine, just so that you can appreciate how rough engines can be! They're almost comically bad!

Firstly this is the turbo wastegate i am going to use to regulate boost pressure and protect the charger from back fires.

The top hose connection will have a regulated pressure from the manifold set to Xpsi and the lower connection a second link to th manifold pressure so that when the regulated pressure in the top is lower than the manifold pressure the valve will lift and vent the pressure back to the supercharger inlet.

Image

Also got round to machining up some brackets to support the charger hears the first one in place.

aligned up
Image

With the rose joint in place :D the bolt through is just a tempory mesure till i make a shaft and put some button heads in its place
Image

my washer bottle and IC resivour came today to!! the front half will be for the charger cooling water and the back will be for the windscreen washer water. yes it is a e30 washer bottle from the cars with the headlight wash wipe function :D

would this not heat up the charge exessively? i've not thought out the consiquences of venting to atmosphere though other than sounding like a steam train!
