OPEN DIFF

I'm a little confused as to what an open diff is?? Can anyone help??

open diff is one that transmits the power to whichever wheel has less grip...
say the road is wet and you spin up your open diffed e30, one wheel will lose traction first.
when that happens with an open diff, all the power goes to the wheel with the least resistance (grip).
LSD (limited slip diffs) have a clutch type system that allows the transfer of power to both wheels, even if they dont have the same level of traction.
LSD's are better for drifting as you can get both wheels to spin evenly when the back end is out, so the car still moves forward..

take it you want to find out if the iS has one?!
glad the explanation made sense...thats basically the way I remember!
btw if you're looking to find out if you have an LSD, there should be an S on the tag or casing of the diff...
plus the last 3 numbers give the ratio, so a 3.91 LSD would have a number ending in 391S
