I'm halfway through replacing my sump with a new one. I've got to the point where the sump is seperated from the engine (it's a 325 by the way)
I was hoping that I would be able to 'jiggle' it out but it seems not to be the case. I presume that I have to jack the engine up to get some clearance???
Is it best to jack it up from underneath or pull it up from above? How far do I need to move it, is there any danger of damaging the fan?
Of course I expect I'll have to losen off the engine mounts. I really just wanted to check that this is the best way to do it and that once the engine is lifted a little I will be able to get the sump out.
I'm sure I read somewhere something about a oil pump??? and getting inside to undo it????
Many thanks in advance.

Fitting a new Sump

H Pete,
I removed a sump from a 325i before and all i did was release the engine mounts etc and CAREFULLY jack from underneath. The oil pick up pipe is too low down in the sump to be able to wiggle around it. Best of luck

Loose the engine mounts, jack it up, then pack between the engine mounts and the crossmember with woods, you should have enough clearance then to get the sump out without removing the oil pick up pipe,if you still can't get it put a scissor jack under one mount arm this gives you a couple more inches, careful when you've got the engine jacked up, don't let the bonnet drop or you'll end up with a nice pointy Jo Guest nipple in the middle of the bonnet from the throttle spindle, bet you can't guess who this happened to,doh!,good luck,Boss
Only just watched a pro do mine, so can will explain how he did it:
First stuck car on the ramp, 6ft up, cradled the cross member with a large jack, undid the crossmember bolts, dropped crossmember and all attached about 6 -8 inches down, kept it in position, undid the plug near the power steering pump end of the sump, undid sump bolts, dropped it clean off.
Mind you I only watched this so it may not be as easy as he made it look
.
Hope this helps,
Mark.

Thanks everyone, Not quite there yet but I got the old sump off by carefully jacking the engine up and wedging some wood between the mounts and the cross member - worked a treat.
However, When I can to open my 'non setting' gasket sealant...... guess what - it had set in the tube!
I only got it yesterday from GSF. I'll be back there tomorrow to explain my dissapointment. Hopefully will have it back on the road soon, driving a 306 non-turbo derv is not much fun but really makes you realise how much better a car 10 years older is!
