I started my car last night after i finished work and the fan belt started screeching does this mean i need a new fan belt or does it just need adjusting?
Thanks

Usually means the belt is loose but you might as well as change it as it's almost the same work.

Nah - if you can tighten it you can change it!
Just be careful with the tensioning nuts as they are very easy to 'round off'.
Once it's loose enough you just pull the old belt off and put the new one on.
Change the PAS/alternator belt too whilst you're there.
If you don't know how to I'm sure there is a thread on here - or check the Hayned/Bently manuals. If don't have those and nobody else replies I'll write something down later.

As the cold weather creeps in, you will find that the fanbelt will start to screech a bit as the rubber can become quite hard and not as flexible as it would be, hense it quietens down or completely goes away in most cases as the car's driven and the heat from the engine warms it up and becomes more "rubbery" again.
