m30 questions

engine is going in soon so i wanna make sure im all good.

I want to know if i can squeeze the m30 lump in and use my original brake servo ??

Is my battery ok where it is ?? ( up front )

what parts would you reccomend to replace before the lump is fitted ??

is my 318 engine loom ok to use? i.e will everything work ?

and heres my parts list, have i missed anything ?

1. e28 535 rad
2. m3 prop
3. 325 exhaust system ( sebring back box ) stock front and middle
4. 3.64 lsd
5. uprated suspension 325 h&r cupkit
6. brake conversion to disks ( rear )
7. fabricated engine mounts x 2
8. unsure of what fan to use, ???? ( need help there ) also where to wire it

Please add anything ive missed. I cant think too striaght at the moment, if you get me

which wheels..... on the 5 series mate, or the bbs on the e30? i was thinking about trying to sell um to be honest. Ive been offered something for them, but i wouldnt want much. the only problem is that i need to move the car about so i would need anything crap to replace them.

You also need :-

M30 throttle cable
M30 downpipes

I used:-
M30 cooling hoses with part of an M20 one (heater - expansion tank - spliced into M30 pipe from 'stat housing.)

Mk1 Golf GTI servo (although a standard E30 one can be used but it's a tight fit).

Spall 15" electric fan. It's possible to go through spare terminals in fuse box but I wired mine outside of it with a sensor Tee'd into the top hose (followed the simple diagram that came with it), and I have a manual over-ride switch on the dash.

My battery was in the boot of my car already but it doesn't get in the way.
Might want to move some weight back though to make up for the M30.

I would recommend replacing the clutch, water pump, engine mounts and prop rubber guibo (if M3's heve them) before it goes in.


Also helps give clearance (especially in position 3) to remove the sound proofing from the bulkhead.

Thats info i needed alright! Is there anyway at all that a fan can be wired as normal without having any kind of switch inside the car?

Yeah, you don't have to have a switch inside, I just like to have control over these things!
M30 engines don't take well to being cooked apparently!
Wiring a fan with a relay isn't complicated.

I'd draw a wiring diagram and post it on here if I knew how!

Well here goes!

I've gone a bit Rolf Harris, but here is the fan wiring diagram as promised!



The dotted line is a wire that is optional, I don't bother with it myself.
It's there so the fan only works with the ignition on but I don't mind if it runs on after I've switched the engine off. The wire next to it with the fuse is used if that one isn't.

The 20A rating for the other fuse may vary depending on the power of the fan you use but 20A is a typical rating.

Be careful not to wire the fan so it runs backwards, it won't harm it, but it will make your engine over-heat!

Twig, does your donor have aircon? if so, everything you need is for the fan is fitted to it!

if you replicate the whole electric cooling fan setup for a aircon E30 using the fan, slow speed resistor (fitted to fan), relays and two stage switch from the E32, it can look nice and factory stylee.

lol great stuff fellas. I dont think the e34 has aircon no, if it did ive been told i could use the fan off it or something ??? Oh well, its just a case of hunting an e34 aircon fan now then, shouldnt be too hard. Thanks for the diagram too driftboy

in my experience, most E32's in the breakers have aircon. if you pull out the whole aircon fan and the temperature switch from the rad, you'll have all the parts you need. the relays are just the 'normal' e30 ones and take up the last spare holes in my fuse box. there may well be the right port for the switch in your rad. mine is fitted in the thermostat housing.
