Have you had a look at the Garmin StreetPilot 2610 up to 2650 Here's the link http://www.garmin.com you can buy them here http://www.maplin.co.uk prices aren't too bad and the Streetpilot unit isn't too bulky or huge ugly looking pods :)
they are totally mobile no wires or installation plus you can hook it up to your PC to download maps etc. :wink:

Pocket PC of your choice, Tomtom Navigator 3 :thumb:

You may well have to put a little work in to make it fit well & look good but you'll have so much more than satnav then, & for the same price or less too! :cool:

I'd have to recommend the Tomtom GO. Had mine well over six months,very esy to use,set-up straight from the box,no need to download anything to get going. You can move it from car to car very easily.New models coming out within a month with postcode search ,and you can add speed camera locations to it also and live traffic updates from Tomtom or pocketgpsworld.com.

Thanks guys. I'm still un-decided about using a pocket PC like an iPaq or similar... I used to use a Palm Vx, but that broke so I'm wondering if it makes sense to get a new organiser at the same time. I like the look of the Garmin Quest too... I guess a lot of this is down to personal preference as they seem to do the same things really.

hello mate was thinking of sat nav for my car and ther is program that you can load onto the nokia 6600 phone which turns it into a sat nav using gprs
i work on the trains and this is the same system that they use and it is pretty spot on to the nearest 5 metres is called co pilogt and you can also get tom tom go on this phone as well as far as i can remeber is that the package costs 249gbp for reciver software and years subscription
but also add on price of the phone so you are looking at Ԛ£350 all in and a few hours fiddling around in the car give me a PM with your nu,ber and i will call you and we can have a chat

This is mines, all you can see is the Ipaq with a wire haning off it.

Image

I sourced the Best GPS Aerial as some of cheapo kits are so bad and are very inaccurate.

heres the link;

http://www.rikaline.com/gps_receiver.htm

The model is the GPS-6010. Its been mounted under the front grills, as its water tight, the cable is very long, and it has a powerful magent to hold it down.

I had the ipaq already. So total cost with Tom Tom Navigator 3 came to Ԛ£145.

Also see here if you go this route.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php

This means my Pocket pc acts as a speed camera detector at the same time!

That's just like my setup! Except I'm running it on an ancient Jornada 540 - that's what I had & it still does the job...

Where exactly have you got the aerial though? Mine was in the corner of the parcel shelf, but that's not exactly feasible in a cab!

Wish I could get it to output something like a traffic information signal though, so I could get it to interrupt my music... I've got an FM transmitter but I've yet to see one that can do that!! I'll get round to fitting a seperate amp / speaker for it sometime...

There are only a few ways of doing this, first you can have tom tom connecting to their database via GPRS or you can have TMC.

see here;

From http://www.trafficmaster.co.uk/shownews.cfm?num=307

RAC offers vehicle manufacturers a choice of RDS-TMC provider

14th March, 2004 - Traffic and travel experts RAC Live have announced the launch of a new high-quality real time traffic information service accessed via a vehicleÔš's on-board satellite navigation system that will now give the UKÔš's automotive industry a choice of RDS-TMC provider.

This new RDS-TMC* (Radio Data System-Traffic Message Channel) service will provide drivers with accurate real time traffic flow data via TrafficmasterÔš's unique fixed sensor network covering the UKÔš's motorways and trunk roads.

Er... that'd be very cool, but it's not really what I meant! All I meant was that I'd like the sound from it to interrupt the stereo like a traffic information broadcast does... I don't like having to keep the tunes on low volume just so I can hear the directions! :jester:

& where dya mean by "under the front grills" for the aerial?

Cheers

You know the heater grills just before the bonnet? Well there.

You can buy kits that will interupt the radio for mobile phones, so whats not to say you cant get one for the ipaq? Ive just never looked but i know they are around.

Personally i'd say save yourelf the pennies and use my patented

"church and Fountain" system

if you see a Church, you're on the right road, and if you see a fountain, you're in the middle of the town :cool:

worked well enough for me and a mate to do 7500 miles around europe in 2 weeks using this method :lol:

You're so right!

- off topic I know but I noticed in your pic that you have the same stuff Naylor has to stop your phone and stuff moving in the trays. Where do you get it? I got some horrible stuff from IKEA but I like the stuff you guys are using.
