Found this ebay seller in Australia I think. M20 turbo product I am looking at are the custom pistons. Apparently they will custom make the pistons to any compression ratio. Also looking at the turbo manifold but its quite expensive and might be for left hookers only.

Check it out

Really? What, forgies? :D

A set of forged M20 pistons for £600 would be bargain of the century as they're about £90 each plus vat for the standard ones I think!

my JE pistons were £600 including all tax and delivery, people have fitted wiesco air cooled VW pistons to BMW engines before for low CR turbo and these forged pistons are really cheap, think it was done on a M30 though, wrist pins are different dimentions then a M20

So that should be ok on right hand drive as it points up, so will clear the steering shaft???

It's not the manifold that causes the issues, it's the downpipe.

Oooooh, talking to a chap I vaguely know about steel rods today. Apparently he can get them for the M20B25, but I'm not sure if they'd go with a 2.7 crank.

The plot thickens! :D

i think* 2.5 rods are used one alpina 2.7's because the wrist oin height is different from all the other M20 pistons so no vernier pulley is needed on them

Aah, I'd prefer to use the longest rods possible so if 2.5 rods can be used (think they're longer than the 2.0 aren't they?) I'll be happy.

He can also get JE forged pistons made to whatever spec.

Maybe a group buy coming :D

Come on, everybody needs a set of forged pistons 8:1 c/r??

Trouble is getting everyone to agree on a spec with this kind of thing. If I can get a forged crank I'm going for a 2.7, if not I'm sticking with a 2.5 so either the pistons or rods or both will be different depending on setup I guess.

Certainly don't wanna go below 8:1 either, might even go a bit higher. If I can't make 450bhp on a relatively high revving M20 I'm gonna be an unhappy bunny!

Alex - If I decide to turbo, which is 99% chance I will. Will those 38mm throttle bodies still be up the the job? I am looking for 300+ hp.

Think Zaust has found some in spain, there's a current thread about them somewhere.....but I'm first!

38mm throttles will not pose a problem for 300bhp with a turbo. You can get away with smaller diameter inlet tracts with FI than N/A which should benefit low end torque if the tract lengths are right, and then the turbo does the rest once it's spooled :)

Out of interest, are the shells that BMW supply with the TD cranks copper cast lead or are they steel backed aluminium. If they're the former then you probably don't wanna use them anyway.

yes 320 rods are 130mm and 2.5 are 135mm

Alex don't panic, if youre really after a TD crank i have 2 :D I'll only use 1, but it's a while off me selling one just yet. Once i have sorted the alpina 2.7 then i'll let one go.

i just measured one of the rods from my spare pina 2.7 bottom end. It's 135mm

just checking but you measure from the centre of the big end to the centre of the wrist pin end right?

Yeah that's right Simon :D

So presumably Alpina used pistons with a lower compression height than the 2.5 then, which is no bad thing as it helps reduce rocking of the pistons I guess.

had funny email from matt at QEP monday he said the top of the JE psitons sits 1mm over the deck and im gona need like a 3mm thick headgasket or machine pistons down for it to work 8O . Ive got a 8.8:1 engine with head of sat in my shell at the moment and pistons sits atleast 4mm over the deck :? So i sent him email back saying whats the problem and ive heard nothin back in 2 days. anyway reason im going on about this is becuase I know your into peugots alex and i think thats mainly what QEP do so do most peugot and other cars pistons sit below the deck? and thats why he thinks its wrong?

Did they spec the pistons up for you then?

What a pain in the arse!

yes, i told them all dimensions of engine that want which wasnt much once I told them it was a M20B25 they said they already had all the info and just needed to know what compression and bore I wanted
