hi all, just been racing a scooby on the a12 and suddenly my car just started missfiring. i was right behind him so at least i went out with a smile.

anyway just got home a whipped the rocker cover off and there it was,
just sitting there broken in half.

right now i removed the broken bit from the engine and the other half is still fixed to the cam, now im hoping thats all the damage but with the broken bit removed and with all back together when i restarted it, there was still quite a rattle in the engine, would this be becouse of the broken rocker arm or could there be some more damage??

Are you saying you replaced the damaged rocker and it's making a rattling noise now ?

Or that you are running it with 11 rockers ?

is there an easy way to replace just one of them, or is it loads of work?

If it's on cyl 6, it'll be quite easy to replace, just unclip all the rockers on that shaft and move them beside the valves so that the shaft can be withdrawn and then slot a new one on.

Might be a bugger on cyl 1 though as I'm not sure the shafts can come out that far with the engine in the car.

Good luck!

Wouldn't run it with a broken rocker though cos if the broken bit gets jammed up against it's not supposed to it'll make a right mess!

I was shocked too ! I thought initially that it could be done without removing the head then when my Dad told me his mechanic had the head on the bench I started thinking Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£ +vat, but nope, Ԛ£175 all in,a very handy mechanic to know, he did a head gasket on my Dads 190 Merc for alot less & no you can't have this blokes number !! I think he works on prices from 1971,suits me. Sorry chaps !

You might want to check the cooling system and timing belt.
If these are off slightly problems show up first at the fith cylinder with either that valve striking the piston in which case you got off light with only a broken rocker. Do a compression check to see if the valve is stuffed.
If its related to the cooling system and you are running hot the spark plug will show this, their's not much you can do about it as the coolent inlet (thermostat) is at the front and by the time it reaches the rear of the block it has no cooling affect. This is down to the design of the engine (not as bulletproof as people think). Most heads fail around number 5 on M20 block. Flush the system if its seen better days and lay off the loud pedal.

I reckon if you have the rad out, you might be lucky and able to slide the shaft forward enough.

I've literally just finished putting all the rockers back in the head on mine.

The main problem was that with all the rockers in, at least one valve on each side of the head is open which puts lots of load on the rockershaft and makes it a bugger to move :(

Good luck dude!

if your only going to change num 5 it should be easy and without the head removed !
i just took all the rockers out of my head .
it took me a while as i had to figure the imposible. but i did it buy getting as many rockers loose and off valves as possible and sliding away from the cam(exhaust and inlet cam!) and clyinder six has to be free too.
i slide the cam away with a punch and then clyinder six rocker comes off
then i put the shaft back and put all the rockers inline with there valves and use the cam sproket to move the cam and got all 5 rockers free (just) and it slids out with you hand then!

ive not put the cam and shaft back yet so i just hope i can do the reverse!

hope ive helped

TBF thats not bad at all is it, cos breaking a rocker sounds dead serious!!
I did the timing belt on mine and it's dead easy but I can see why it's labour intensive. Sounds like you've got a good mechanic mate.
