Its on a 318i (m40) 1990/H with 108,000 on the clock,

How can i check if its a wheel bearing? its like a hissing sizzling sound.

My wheel bearings are 'droning' on the rear too.. But since my crappy Dunlop FM901's are SO BLOODY NOISY I just pretend I can't hear anything.

I have a very noisy diff that I have in a car that I will be sprinting this year.

I have the back seat out so the noise is very audible. It is a real hissing sound when you get up to speed.

THe majority of the noise disappears at speed when everything warms up.

So if it is considerably worse when it is cold, I would suspect the diff.

i have exactly the same problem...

i have changed the oil in my diff and still drones and gats high pitched at speed. Ive never heard of so many people having diff problems so i would put money on it being wheel bearings!

I just turn the radio up

Careful adjustment of the volume knob will cure all sorts of noises not just diffs 8)
