I'm in the market for a radar detector and have found several sites claiming that the new highways bill will not be going ahead.

So, can anyone recommend a good radar/laser detector that doesnt suffer from false alarms in town and gives more than the 1 metre of warning that some are blighted with ?

I've been looking at the Cobra and Snooper models, any good ?.

I don't intend to use it to break the limit all the time but it would be nice to have a warning just in case I do slip up

Cheers,

They all give false alarms in town mate. Automatic doors at supermarkets are the problem!

I'd go for a GPS based system - such as the Road Angel, with the addition radar / laser detection. That way if they do become illegal, you can take the radar detection off. They wont be able to make GPS illegal.

FWIW, they get quite irritation if you pass a few cameras on the way into work!

I have Bel Target 550 and after 3 years it gave a software problem and now it won't work. The problem is it is out of warranty now and Target Automotive said it is unrepairable and don't want to hear about gatting it back operational.
It worked Ok I have to say when it worked, although in town you get false alerts, no matter what they say. These highly depend on the region you are driving through. Now it is useless though - so my advice -avoid Target 550 :!: . If you have a problem and out of warranty (so Target Automotive said)- you have wasted your money
Another thing: their so called preset Country modes simply don't work. You'll have to choose yourself the desired frequencies available on Internet

i have the snooper s4 neo its 2 units one behind the grill and one on the dashboard - you can have both on the dashboard but my car has a heated front screen which effects it so they recommend fitting it behind the grill .

never had any false alarms saved my ass a few times -picks up all cameras used in the uk -and as i found out in europe but the are illegal there.
needs updates off the internet for new locations etc
i have found it to be very good !

Best detector is the Mk1 eyeball.Nothing protects you from Truvelos.I have one on my route to work that works from the REAR as well as from the front.Guess how I found out?(2.7 running well, now have 2250 miles up,visited 4500rpm for the first time last night on my way to work, almost let go of the wheel..lucky I was wearing brown trousers...)

The snooper evolution is your best bet; it cost only £150 quid form halfords and does all sorts of cameras including police radars and detectors, Gatso, truvelo speed checks, the lot. And also police hot spots; and it uses GPS so if they do pass the bill it still legal to an extent im told.
