My 318i was not fiited with ABS it was an extra, but on page 23 of the handbook it shows it as (O) with the letters ABS inside the circle it should go out after the engine is started, it will fail an MOT if it stays on.

if it hasn't got ABS in it and the lines round the side are dashes, then its your brake wear indicator.
They are located front left and rear right (if you have rear discs)
Its on for one of three reasons
1) your pads are worn (self explanatory, methinks...)
2)The wear sensors are wet/not connected. If the joint between the two parts is wet, it can lead to a false reading.Furthermore, they could be disconnected (this is the case in my car) due to there being no wires from the pads.
3)iirc malfunction of this light can be caused by the SI board batteries going flat...
this should be enough for you to identify whats happening, just do a search for brakes on the forum and read away!

Light to the right of the handbrake light is the pad wear light.
If you've recently done the pads, then the most likely reasons are that the plugs on the wear sensors are not making contact properly, or you didn't dress the swnsor wires properly and the've worn through on the inside of the wheel rim.
It's not the SI batteries in the cluster that cause a probblem with the pad wear light, it's a dry jointed 220 ohm resistor behind the fuel gauge.

I stand corrected by Brian over the SI board bit-i'll try and remember that its the 220Ohm resistor..Brianmoooore wrote:Light to the right of the handbrake light is the pad wear light.

But it defo sounds like the brake wear light!
15 mins, some WD40 and some insulating tape should have all the sensors, clean, dry and functioning
Good luck!
