Factory fitted alarm

I was wondering if anybody knows how the factory fitted alarm ( the lock...) was wired in?

Think it was connected into the cars wiring harness through specific connectors. If you check the ETK (you can find it online at realoem.com) you will see the various components that make up the factory alarm.

All done in and around the glovebox area. Most of the connectors have to be added in, but the immobiliser socket is already there - a white two pin socket with green wires above the glovebox, normally fitted with a shorting loop.

Look on ETM for the c/l wires you patch into as for the rest they are all plug and play assuming this is a genuine BMW alarm for an e30. I have one in my car I fitted and it's colour matched to the wires they go to. If your not sure of a wire let me know the colour and postion on the alarm loom and I'll let you know.

You should have wires for the door switches(2), boot, bonnet, 2 sensors, 2 wires for indicators, 1 unlock, 1 lock and 1 dead lock.

I'm more interested in what the alarm control unit does. I know that it is connected to the engine ecu, but as I'm putting another engine in, I'm trying to figure out if I can do anything with the thing or if I should just bin it...

All the alarm does is cut the power to the fuel pump which is why the green wire runs into the box and back out. It doesn't connect to the ecu thats only on the later e36 alarms with ews. It is triggered by the doors, boot and bonnet, ultrasonic sensors and ignition power. I wouldn't bin it somebody would by it off you if it's complete, you can also get a electric window closer for it which i also have so it closes the windows when you lock the car.

It's actually the ignition feed to the engine loom that's disabled by the factory alarms, disconnecting power to the ignition coil and preventing the ECU getting the 'switch on' signal, which in turn, of course, stops the ECU switching on the fuel pump.
Some late E30 ECUs had a dedicated pin on their ECUs for an immobiliser, but nothing as sophisticated as the EWS system that was introduced around 1996.

Well... EWS is going into my car... Probably not worth keeping the old alarm, although I'm anoyed to have the awful second lock and boot light doing nothing...

Does anyone know what to if your factory alarm just decides to make a constant siren, apart from turn it off which I've done?? It just one day started, not going off just a constant beep, bizarre????

I've known them do this when the internal battery in the sounder fails.
I've replaced these battery packs with ones intended for emergency escape lighting (see www.cpc.co.uk) on a couple of occasions, but, TBH, they are better binned, freeing up a lot of space under the bonnet and above the glovebox.

Brian .. do you know if it is still posable to purchase a new key for the alarm on my 1990 cabby?
from what i can tell the alarm is still in working condition but ive no key to try it?
ive also thought of just removing the alarm all together but i'm a bit worried that once removed my car may not start up?

Can anyone tell me exactly where in the back of the glove box the factory fit alarm actually went? I'm fitting an alarm to provide the keyless entry feature I can’t live without and would like to replicate the factory arrangement as far as possible. Above the glovebox? On the bulkhead? To the side? Brian???

OEM alarm module on a RHD car lives above the engine ECU.

On a LHD it is tucked up behind the ABS module on the (LHD) drivers side.
