Some pics of todays work stripping the head.
4 x rocker shafts and shed loads of springs/washers/nuts/etc has been frying my brain a bit
All the bits are neatly baged up and i took some picys to refresh my memory for when i reasemble it all.

Not to badly bent

Shiny white bit on the edges is where the piston hit them.

Thankfully REC has got some replacment valves in stock for me as the they arn't BMW ones.
The valve seats look undamaged but i had to tap out one of the valves from the head and it collected some metal swarf from the valve guide in the collet groves so i think i might have to get a new guide put in,but over all i think i got off lightly !
I can't wait to see what the bottom end of the engine looks like but it won't be comming out for a while.
Suprising thing is there wasn't any metal swarf in the head from the bottom end going bang !?

lucky they had the valves you need hey! i guess it would have been very pricey to get more made up specially.
i actually quite like the idea of a 330d engine in an e30, i'd wondered about that before. i think it would make a good car because all that torque in such a light chassis would mean you could run ridiculously long gearing and still be quick, esp with the 6sp box the 330d has now
only thing is the diesels are still iron block so heavier

what about the ultimate diesel engine, ,,,,,,,,,,
form the 535D, twin turbo 3 litre 0-60 in the e90 chasis 6.5 seconds
imagine that in a e30, the 0-60 would be mentalll,, would be a hell of a install in the e30 bay tho..

i had done some enquiries about it, the only real difference to an m50 conversion is the manifolds as that have the turbo on as well.. it is heavier tho yeah and the lumps rarely turn up.. think i'll stick with an m50 conversion for now.. maybe next time when the d lumps come up a bit more often and at cheaper money lolToby_Unna wrote:i actually quite like the idea of a 330d engine in an e30, i'd wondered about that before. i think it would make a good car because all that torque in such a light chassis would mean you could run ridiculously long gearing and still be quick, esp with the 6sp box the 330d has now![]()

I think the main difference between the M50/M52 is the wiring. The 2.8 will have EWS but its not that difficult to wire up. You have the same issues with exhaust manifold etc, so its not much different.Moofles wrote:i know davei would go for 2.8 if possible, i believe same amount of effort as wil's m50, and for that you get the potential power mentioned plus way more mpg than an m20 2.5!
As for the 330d - theres a guy near me with a 330d engine in an E30 M3. Does seem to be quick, but it sounds horrible

the 328i setup i was looking at said it had the complete loom including ignition and key etc. would i need anything else to get round the EWS, would i have to install the e36 ignition switch instruments etc in my car?jmc330i wrote: I think the main difference between the M50/M52 is the wiring. sorry to be so clueless, i haven't any idea when it comes to modern engines. with an m30 you just connect up 3 wires and you're away (until you lose the oil pump
cheers james all help appreciated. not decided to do the m52 thing yet but useful to know what it would take to do it.

A monstrious diesel engine in an E30 would be really really funny, youd do about 35mpg and still wh00p almost anything you see. Im not sure if new BMW diesels clatter but if they did could you imagine the faces of the other drivers?

m52 wrongness.....
not a economical way to power in an e30.....
an m30 however is! thats the beauty of the conversion....
although an m52 is no doubt superior in technology, weight etc...
toby may i just say ure car handles awesome even with that weight up front!

yeah get a compression test and if the engine has done say 50k miles and compression is ok, you're sorted!
