Has anyone done this at all or have knowledge on it and is it a worthwhile upgrade over the AFM considering the costs involved?

The costs are almost the same as Standalone management. The gains are typically 10 bhp and 10 lb.ft torque peak.
You'll get much bigger gains in the midrange.

Personally I think it is worth it given the added benefit of brilliant fuel consumption.

The gain cannot be quantified in reality.

What you can expect is to squeze every bit of power out of the engine and to vastly improve driveability over a AFM system. Throttle response is massively improved.

You'll have the Alpina again soon so you'll be able to really tell what stand alone management is capable of on a 2.7

A normal C2 2.7 is good and feels like a quick 325i. One that has got Stand Alone (in this case MBE) really transforms the C2 into a real beast.

Just fitted a Miller MAF to my '88 325iSE. Agree with what M5pilot says about improved throttle response, etc. :D

I am liking this Miller kit.

Looks like we might need to meet up for me to have a look.

Where exactly are you based?

Only had it on the car for a day so a bit early to tell reliability-wise, etc., but it seems high quality, and not much really to go wrong (in any case, they supply spare air-flow sensors). I'm near Canterbury in Kent.

Cheers,

have you had the car rolling roaded before you fitted it to see what power your running? Interested to know the before and after on that. How long did delivery take?

If this kit truly works well then I would suggest everyone to buy it given the exchange rate these days.

Advantages in fuel economy, throttle response and power are well worth the expense.

No, afraid not - not sure where my nearest dyno place is. Delivery was quick - just over a week, all the way from Canada. No customs charges to pay either - they marked the box 'Gift', which was sweet of them :)

If we were to stock the upgrade maybe but since it's cheaper for people to go direct and save on import duty, VAT etc it's not worth it for us.

I'm sure someone else will buy it and get it tested.

i don't like the part where it comes with a chip because the map in the chip is good for a standard low compression 325i only.

But you can ask them to change the map to suit your engine.......

There are 3 things that they will change for you....

Rev limit.
Octane Rating.
Higher/Lower Compresion Engine.

would it not be better to do without the chip and have a new chip rr re-mapped to take into account any other mods you might have done?...or does this maf require specific software

Miller do say that thier chip is re-mappable so that you can get the best from any futer mods, like cams or headers..but not sure on the software you use....

Well, it seems to work pretty well in my '88 high compression lump (which previously had a Zone Mild chip fitted). It's been too damp lately to get any decent performance figures but I haven't noticed any dramatic drop in performance, put it that way! It's certainly smoother and more responsive overall, and easy to get good fuel economy - I managed 30mpg average this evening on a short (5-mile) run, whereas the car previously averaged around 26mpg with the AFM on similar journeys.

Actually.... hmm.... around £275 for the MAF (including shipping), right? Say you're doing around 6 000-10 000 miles per year? The difference between 25mpg (before) and 30 mpg (after) is roughly 1L/100 km. Let's take 10 000 miles, that's roughly 16 000 km. That's around around 160 L of fuel saved which even at the price of £1/1L is still only £160.

I don't know how many of you are using your e30's as everyday hacks, and how accurate is yearly mileage, but at these figures (assuming my calculations are correct) it doesn't make much sense on strength of fuel consumption alone. Now, if this also helps to get rid of the stupid bloody kangarooing at 1500 rpm - it could be worth it.

Yep, I agree. The improved economy is a pleasant bonus however! Certainly, the improved throttle response is well worth having, since it makes the car more refined and controllable and there's been none of the kangarooing that I had previously (my AFM was AFAIK the 18-year old original to be fair). Starting the car seems to be easier too, despite the cold/damp weather lately. And, it looks good IMHO 8) My E30 is a daily hack btw.

If you can get this Miller kit for the prices being quoted it's worth it. When I had my M20 converted to MAF about 4 years ago it would cost circa £1k.

For that money now, you may as well forget fitting an M52 MAF and just fit the whole engine.

Actually, since 25mpg = 11.3L/100km and 30mpg = 9.4L/100km, the difference is around 1.9L/100km. Hence, a saving at a price of £1/L of around £304 over 10,000 miles...

MAf is as quoted on the Millers site, real cost is the fact you are still tied to the motronic, and those that can/will map it.

With MS, with minimal instruction you have full control and all the develpoment software, no-one apart from Emerald offers this, and even Mr Walker does not give you "full" control as there are layers to the programme.

Ms supplied and fitted with mapping is £687.90 from A-tech

DaveD, you cheapskate - buy the whole MAF kit and be done with it! You need the chip to go with it (don't think it will work with a standard AFM-type chip...)
