That sounded like I'd blown a chip or something, it was nothing like that, just a major cleanup of all the components and setting things up like the throttle butterfly gap and CO etc. It's gone from not idling properly and driving like a bag of nails on small throttle openings to being lovely and smooth with no hesitation at junctions etc, transoformed the car.
I might be doing some minor mods in the future such as a chip and TB but I'm not going to go mad as it's my daily driver and I need decent fuel comsumption and drivabilty.

That soud's like exactly what I need to do, ropey idling and a lot of hesitation when it's cold. Can I find it in the haynes manual, butterfly and CO etc...?Andy_magic wrote:That sounded like I'd blown a chip or something, it was nothing like that, just a major cleanup of all the components and setting things up like the throttle butterfly gap and CO etc. It's gone from not idling properly and driving like a bag of nails on small throttle openings to being lovely and smooth with no hesitation at junctions etc, transoformed the car.
Cheers
19mpg around town and 34mpg on motorway.

That MPG figure I gave was a combined urban and motorway.
mmmmmmm M5 is there an emoticon for jealousy?
I don't know if the stuff I did is in the haynes (or bentley) as I don't have either one. I'm an EX Saab technician and used to build and maintain Formula V single seaters so i know my way round fairly well. Even if I do ask silly questions on here!
I am writing a procedure for what I've done and will be hosting it on my web site but it's no where near ready yet and I've a heap of photos to take.
I'm also going to have a go at the injectors when I get chance as chances are mine are spraying badly with 175k on them. I've got a spare set i'll be messing with so I can be brave with one set.

Legend mate, let us know when the websites ready could do with some no nosense techie matainence advice, I always get fobbed off by mechanics when I say I can do a job myself they tend to suck air throught their teeth and say "well I won't tell you how to do it cos if you fuck it up you'll blame it on me"!
I'm on 170,000 miles too, do you think it would make a difference changing the injectors? No in any hurry at the mo though got a saab to tend to and another e30 to change the timing belt on, so when you hav your website up I'll probably be ready for it!
You were never tempted by a SAAB 900 turbo then?
Was driving my bros last week and in the speed/torque/handling department it was pants, may just be cos his is old and crap though

No worries mate, i'll post a link here when it's up for reading.
My take on the injectors is that they will probably be fairly mucky due to having petrol on them since the 80's and being heated up and cooled down alot. I've got some Bosch literature somewhere about cleaning them up (not re-con) i'llhave to have a look at it.
I used to run a couple of Saab's, one was an 87 9000 turbo that I had played with, nothing major, just a 3 bar regulator and 'adjusted' ECU, not chipped. The Saab APC cars had adjustable inputs in the ECU and you just turn the sensitivity down on the knock sensor as they are so conservativley set up to allow you to run crap petrol and not blow them up, I always stuck 4 star in it. These 2 mods would get you from 185hp to about 205.
I had a 900 Turbo also, it was a bit of a shed but the engine was sweet, I picked it up cheap as it didn't go right, did the usual thing of fettling everything etc.
Once it was running as it should I modded the ECU and would the boost up. I remember setting it up so that it boosted to the end of the red on the APC guage in second gear and then going to town in it.
When I got to the A14 I opened it right up in second and grabbed third gear with a huge smile on my face, right up until the car cut out and made a really strange, loud whisle, pulled over to the hard shoulder and got out, fearing the worst. opened the bonnett and looked in, expecting an expensive looking mess only to find the brake servo vacuum take off had blown itself out of the inlet manifold.
I should have wound the boost down really, but I simply re-fitted the servo hose and used a couple of tie wraps to hold it onto the manifold.
Superb!

My bro did that on his, boosting well in to the red it was becaus he had one of those red boxes, tried to vertake huge pisst noise like a blown tyre and he'd blown the tube off the turbo that goes to the intercooler!!
I sill think they handle like a wet halibut on the bendy stuff compared to a 325.

I agree on the handling compared to an E30, is his 900 a Carlsson cos they are as rare as hens teeth.
Nope he just had one of thse red boxes, he sold it after the pipes went pop!
the red box that is.
He had a 900 8 valve turbo which he got for free from a mate and when that failed it's mot he got a 16 valve, it's got the toys but not a carlsson.
Do they have better handling / suspension?
I just found if you gave it some on uneven country lanes it tended to be all over the place, think its with the power goin through the wheels that are steering.

Carlsson is to Saab what Alpina is to BMW, although it's all in house.
They have uprated suspension, power and brakes and lots of toys. A 900 is quite a nice car to drive if in good shape, but its not like an E30 for balance.
A 900 shouldn't torque steer as they have equal length drive shafts, but a worn out one will be all over the place on uneven roads

It was not torque steer just when putting the power down it would hit the rought edge of the road on a corne an jump around not solid and firm over the bumps like an e30.Andy_magic wrote:A 900 shouldn't torque steer as they have equal length drive shafts, but a worn out one will be all over the place on uneven roads
Used to have an old mini so I know what torque steer is

My 205bhp Saab 9000 used to torque steer like mad (unequal length driveshafts)
It would also spin it's wheels at 65mph in the wet, fun but scary stuff.
I've been messing about this again with the 320i and found a bodge that was causing some cold start problems.
There's a multi connector under the inlet manifold and throttle body that has the loom for the injectors/temp sensors.
Who ever owned it before me has changed the BMW connectors for those hideous, unreliable blue bullet connectors. Not only that but they hadn't connected it up properly and thought it 'cool' to plumb the -ve signal leads to the ECU temp input. I'm surprised it ran at all, let alone as well as it did.
They also didn't make a good ground for the blue temp sensor so it was causing some seriously rich cold start conditions.
anyway, I've sorted these little problems out and it seems much happier when cold, funny thing is, it ran nicely when hot..... wierd

I've got a spare loom that I plan to graft in and replce the multi plug but I'll do it when I change the injectors over etc.
I'm waiting for a nice day that isn't really windy as I have to do all my work on the road at the moment, soldering in the wind is like p155ing in the wind.
