Need to finish my exhaust system swap on my 325i which is taking longer than expected due to round nuts and snapped studs. Great fun!

Main aim is to collect the 325i sport after christmas and start the m30 swap - the pile of parts for the swap is growing ever larger it seems.

Are you taking the sump off with the engine in the car ?

If so, not a nice job on your back in this cold  :)

Not nice, are you drilling the snapped stud out and helicoiling it ?

2 studs were snapped, both flush with the head, got one out today though - drilled it using a flexi attachment and then tapped a small bladed screwdriver into it and then simply un-screwed it. The next one wil be tricky - it's the lower one on port 6 so harder to access.

Hoping to get loads of pics up on the 3.5 conversion project, can't wait to get started. :D

The dodgy way of doing it is too prop the engine up by the exhaust/inlet manifolds so you can lower the subframe a bit, not to sure on an M20 though ?

The other alternative to a engine hoist is an engine brace thingy, it sit's across your wings and then you tie the engine to it so you can drop the sub frame.

You might be able to DIY one with some scafolding tube and some ingenunity :)

all im planning to do is a bit more tidying up under the bonnet and form some heatshields around the clutch fluid reservoir as its just inches away from my turbo and has started to melt the plastic bottle, and another heatshield around the air filter.might swap my diff over to see what difference a 3.64 ratio makes winkeye

andy - cheers, or i could always cable tie it to my strut brace winkeye

when taking the exhaust mani off do the studs most likely snap, would an air gun used gently be better than a ratchet

Better with a ratchet i'd say as you can apply a steady/even undoing pressure by hand.

It's not a job i'd do unless i had too.

I've removed a few m20 manifolds now - and I think the best bet is to clean up the nuts as best as possible, then soak them in wd40 overnight - the next day re-apply the freeing oil - get a good 6 sided socket on the nut and use a breaker bar to apply sharp force to them, in my experience they are more likely to sheer when you gradually increase the force on tehm with a ratchet. Take them by suprise!

Cool, it's quite a big change of gearing but you might like it better due to you having plenty of grunt to pull the longer gearing ?

will it make a noticable difference then?how should it affect things like acceleration and top end as my first gear at the moment is a very short, quick change? :?

Not a lot thats why i'm bored ! :)

Nah, after crimbo day i'm going to dummy fit my twin TB and manifold so i can sort out the throttle cable length and mold a lead nipple on the end. I need to sort out a throttle cable bracket and try to squeeze an M30 air box in to my engine bay.

I need to sort some sort of mounting bracket for the air box and plumb it up to the TB and to the crank case breather pipe.
