I honestly can't believe this, it's shocking!! For a big BMW engine like this to go bang in such a monumentous way!

Pretty scary cos I wanna do this conversion, and you know how I drive!

Andy, the Mazda is going in for an MoT on Saturday morning, but has no Tax - If you need it, it's there.

Thanks a lot for the offer mate i'll get back to you soon as i'm not sure yet what i'm going to do,might be getting just a replacment engine or i might be buying a cheap E34 535 to run around in whilst the head is being stripped and i'm waiting to see weather i can get some more valves from REC.

Just ordered head gasket set,head bolts,oil spray bar and 2 rockers,it wasn't cheap !

Dave,Thanks for the offer of the loan of the car but as i said above i don't know whats happening yet.I shouldn't worry mate as this failure is VERY rare normally,my car was running sweetly and i was on the way back from Redditch so i wasn't thrashing it while the engine was cold.

Andy,

I mean you can have it back if you wish, I'm hoping it'll pass the MoT Saturday.....It's going into a garage where a mate works anyway!
Plus we could sort out the steering rack at the same time..... :)

Up to you mate, you did me a favour, now I can return the favour (kind of!) if need be. Let me know!

yeah too bloody right, there's a complete e36 328i m52 package on ebay for Ԛ£700 at the moment and i'm toying with the idea of ditching the 3.5 and buying that (except it would have to go on the plastic which ain't a terribly good idea!)

i like the idea of an aluminium engine. and m52s make good power as long as they don't have the nikasil bore wear problem!

johno my engine's still in the car mate? there's no point in him rebuilding my oil starved m30, there's plenty of ones that work fine kicking around and they go cheap

andy how many miles were on ure engine?

and did it have history etc....

this double failure is very very worrying...... 8O

m30s and m10s are prob the most legendary lumps from bmw EVER!!!!! and of all things for an oil pump to give up the ghost on 2 engines is very very freaky...

would be interesting if u could strip the pump and check it out....

It had about 120k and never used a drop of oil.My old E34 had a lot of dealer and specialist stamps in the service book so it was well looked after.

As to why two M30 have had major probs so close together i think it's just some freaky coincedence(sp?) ,like you say they are legendary in reputation.

Toby has had an idea that it might not have been my oil pump due to the light only comming on for a couple of second's and that an oil way to the No1 big end might have got blocked ?

Only trouble is it's going to be realy hard to diagnose what happened as its going to be a big big mess down in the sump/crank area ! The oil pump might be battered as it sits right below the cylinder that fcuked up.

hmm that's a matter of opinion!

i know what you mean but the m52 is a pretty high spec (closer to an m-power engine anyway) and unlike the 2.5 m50 there's a lot of scope for more power without spending silly money - 2.5 inlet manifold and a remap is all it needs...

24v, hydraulic tappets and an alu block

anyway i can't fcuking afford it so i'll just shut up now and go back on ebay to find another clattering m30 :teehee:

m30 better than m52? stop talking toss guys! you're talking about a 2.8 that's almost as high power as a 3.5, and that's before you spend ~Ԛ£1k on m50 inlet manifold, remap, intake, and cams and get yourself a tidy 250-260hp! and it is a nice engine to use, as well.

but yeah...let's go with an m30

I was only joking Adam!

It'd be great to have a 328 engine in an E30, from what I understand, it's more difficult to put in?

It'd probably be more reliable, and use less fuel when driven normally.

I'd be happy with either in mine, or even a working 2.5 at the moment.

i know dave  i would go for 2.8 if possible, i believe same amount of effort as wil's m50, and for that you get the potential power mentioned plus way more mpg than an m20 2.5!

Perhaps Daves car needs a little LCD display on the rev counter that says....

PLEASE DONT BOUNCE ME OFF THE LIMITER

Thats a negative, we both (well you DID) get about the same mpg as an M20. :P

It's difficult to not bounce it off the rev limiter when you are doing donuts and aren't even in the drivers seat!

lol that was cos i was driving 4 miles to tesco's and back for the whole tank (and sometimes just not moving  )! normal driving you can get 30mpg pretty easily (that's a mix of town/motorway)...

I have yet to attain the magic 30 figure in my driving around, hence my slight leaning to look for something that slurps the flammable stuff a bit less :?

Id love a 330d but unfortunately i dont have about 15k in my pocket unless someone wants to pay me that for this car :o
