Hi mate.
I used to own a silver 318iS and it was a great machine. excellent perfomance and handling, but after 9 months, i lost interest, so i sold it, and now am looking for a 325i sport.

If this is ur first e30, invest in a 318iS, so u get some experience with old bmw rear drive technology, then move onto the meatier 2.5 lump!

this is an age old arguement that will never go away and being honest mate just take both out for a test drive if you want to know about each car ask ppl that have got one as in these posts it always turns into a cat fight.. there both good cars in there own right i own both granted yea my 325i started life as a 320i but its sitting sport spec. ive also owend a genuine 325is a few years ago and yea being honest the straight 6 noise does it for me but im not going to knock the 318is they are good cars and ive ripped saxo vtr and vts s in it ive also lost my wee brother in his 2.0 nova on the twistie stuff (never get over his face!!) it really depends on what you want. if both are looked after they can be great cars and yea the 318is has the added advantage of being a timing chain so no belt to replace just make sure there isint any rattles from the chain as the tensionars can couse havack if they go wrong.. i got one earlier in the year in a deal that the chain had snapped on and i ended out breaking it couse i couldnt find an engine. thats the draw back of the 318is if they go wrong under the bonnet there hard to get spares for.. if you do find them it will cost you where as lets be honest if a 325 goes wrong you can source parts in most scrappies or ebay and from here. there both the same shell and suspension and brakes so its not really a big prob there but if your buying it to keep look at the big pic not just the here and now

Well, I have some cash to play with now, not much admittedly, but it means I can start looking, now I just have to resist the temptation of buying the first shed I come across, this has happened in the past with cars and then I end up spending fortunes just to get them drivable.
Best hold out another couple of weeks then i`ll have about a grand to spend.

I would rather have a 318is over a 325i anyday!

They are far from being slower and will outhandle/pace a 325i.

Keep on dreaming 6pot loosers

318iS 0-100 = 26.6.
325i 0-100 = 20.8 seconds.

Yeah, 318iS will definitely outpace a 325i.

Keep dreaming four pot peasants. Find a speed range in which your iS outguns a 325i and we'll take you seriously! Definitely a case of little knob syndrome methinks! :D

It's another demlot hybrid!

How about your 4dr 318is vs my 4dr 325i on a track?? Would settle the arguement somewhat!

Nice one Theo, it may help...
jamesh1977 wrote:this is an age old arguement that will never go away
No... there is no argument... what is the argument ? Powelly wants some buying advice to let's tell him the truth shall we...

Assume two standard cars, same level of condition, same driver...

325i faster = fact
318is more economical = fact
318is handles better = unproven
318is is faster round a track = unlikely
325i faster in most everyday road driving conditions = very likely

Surely nobody here buys these things for economy ? You would buy a golf or some other more modern diesel car which is highly likely to be quicker than both...

But quite possible. After all they have the same chassis but the engine is 30 odd pounds lighter.

But 35 bhp more than makes up for it and the 325i is just a nicer car to drive imo. Lots more useable torque, decent fuel economy (my Touring did 28 mpg easily enough) and the handling was still very good. With the 3.91 diff it had very good go in 5th gear - however I fitted a 3.64 to make it better on motorways and to be honest it didn't really hurt the acceleration much.
With it's 320i boot badge it still went past an arsehole in an E46 M3 with 140 on the clock (real 130 ish). You could see the bird in the passenger seat giving the twat a right bollocking - bet he didn't get any that night. :D

Andyboys 325 touring, another one of PMWs quality low mileage creampuffs ! :)

There is only one way to end this age old debate

In the 318is 'pubic inches aren't everything ' corner we have Demlot

In the 325 'squeal , bitch' corner we have Theo

How about we arrange a impromptu race ?, on private property of course .Does any one know of any cheap trackdays coming up ? then we can finally settle this argument.
Theo can be in his 'chromemeister' 4 door 325 and Demlot can be in his 4 door 'chibmeister'

Both cars are relatively stock and both drivers competent.

Obviously both cars will be given a cursory checkover before the event to make sure Theo hasn't accidentally dropped in a 3.5 or that Demlot hasn't borrowed one of Kos's + 43bhp chips !

Since we are talking about penniless AIDS ridden student types ,i don't mind contributing some beer / petrol money to the cause and i am sure other zoners would chip in .Maybe we could place bets on who will win and the proceeds could be put towards the cost of the track day or divvied up between the two heroes ?.
I have discussed this with Andyboy and he has kindly offered to give the winner a stick of mansfield rock !

So an 318iS is slower than an 325i, but a 325i will beat an E46 M3.

oh dear.

its entirely down to driving preferences.

325i is a nice lazy car- spins up well, and plenty of low down torque.

iS is a screamer relative to a 325i. gotta thrash it to get the best. handles well, but not much if any better than a 325i (IMHO andrew  )

the 318iS definately feels a lot quicker than the quoted times and power suggest(not timed andyboy) mine when stripped was a hoot to drive, and very rewarding. Pacerpete, I fear that any iS or 325i you've had were faster than any m3 to date, afterall "rust is lighter than titanium" 8O

Course not y'goddamned crazy fool!

I was driving up the M1 in the Touring. 85, middle lane, inside lane full of trucks and old dead types. Some cunt in an M3 Convertible comes steaming up behind me and flashes me to move over - the outside lane is empty and I can't really pull in. So he comes past and gives me a look.

"Okay shithead" thinks I, "let's see how fast you want to go".

I let him draw about 1/2 a mile in front and wind up the 325i, all 170 bhp of it. I caught M3 twat completely unaware. He was doing over 100, I was flat out, just under 6000 in 5th and 140 on the dial. I sailed by and craftily cut in front, 320i badge respledent. He then caught up, both cars doing about 130 and I could see his Mrs giving him a right earful. he backed off, I won.

A quality, quality moment and one to treasure. :D

Sadly the 325i broke a ring not long after that. Jeez I used the trash the tits off it - but it still lives because I saw it in the Midland Autotrader 3 weeks ago for £895!

I'd say 80% of "races" on public roads are down to bottle :)

A scooter can scalp a Ferrari if the latter is a numpty or not otherwise up for it (I've seen this happen in the give and take of peak traffic - Italians are nuts!). There are times when skill will come into it but like Andyboy says, most of the time its merely a question of "how lucky do you feel?", "are you game, bitch?" or "will your missus notice?" :snigger:

gotta agree on the one driver part, takes any skill diffs out of the equasion(sp?).

M42 in production for a few years, then revised into the M44

M20( was M60) in production from the mid 70's (willing to be corrected) til late 1989- unchanged in basic design.

now, based on that, which is the "best" ?

I'm well up for it! You can do an hour at brands for £40 now and then, perhaps we could sort soemthing out then. My car is fairly standard, zone chip being the only performance mod at the moment - but I will be fitting a 6 branch in the next couple of days... hopefully! Fear not though - I'm also fitting a scorpian centre box which will apparently loose me all my torque!!
