Ok,seeing as your waiting for the pics i'll spill the beans :)

Was traveling on the local autobahn at about 120mph @ 5000rpm(ish) when the oil pressure light came on for about 2 seconds,i took my foot off the gas straight away.It seemed ok,no unwanted noises or smoke so i took it easy for a few more miles and came to the (wrong)conclusion that it was just an electrical glitch that set the light off.So i accerated back up to some daft speed until i noticed it wouldn't go past a certain level of rev's,just as i noticed that i hear a thud, the engine cut out and lots of smoke poured from the back of the car 8O

The mangled con rod i pulled out of the hole in my block by hand ! Notice the burned/melted end due to no oil, imagine how hot that got !

Image

I was i little up set to begin with, but i'm ok now i know my flowed head and schrick cam look ok,pheew !

Other damage 1 broken rocker and 2 bent valves.I will be sending the head away for inspection/skimming,just have to see if it's damage the head in a way i can't easily see ?

So i'm on the hunt for an E34 M30 engine or a cheap E34 535 to rob it's engine from so i can put my head back on.

Now wheres Toby got to....... ;-)

Andy, bloody nightmare that, but it does sound like you got away lightly, could have disolved the entire motor at that speed,I guess its all to do with how it breaks if you know what I mean.
I had a con rod snap off the crank of my ole Series 3 Landy at 40mph,it completly destroyed the engine.
Hope you get sorted soon fella

My damage consited of a 12 x12 inch hole in the side of the block,
mangle piston and rod, mangled crank,at that point I stopped looking for any more damage.
I did drop down what was left of the sump, the amount of metal that came out at the same time suggested huge internal damage too.
I was gutted, lost a fortune on that Landy

Sounds like you'll have your up and running again pretty soon.
PS the warning signs i shoul;d have noticed was spots of oil on the back of the truck.
If there is and you haven't got an oil leak it suggests piston ring and bore wear, this in turn allows movement in the big end bearing which can wear out pretty quick, then BANG it all goes horrible!

Post destroyed engine damage advice!

Fat lot of good for the Landy, but it did teach me a valuble lesson.

I can certainly recommend it if you want to completley wreck your motor!

I hadn't realised what I had done to start with,as it was dark,i just stopped, obviously(!) and felt around in the engine bay and felt something that wasn't supposed to be there,ah,that'll be a piston then 8O

Have a look on the back of your Tourer for oil spots, might give you an answer :?

i wish somebody would tell me what the reason is!

seriously i've never known anyone with a late style m30 that lost an oil pump, and now mine and Andy's have both gone within a couple of weeks (we have identical short blocks except mine's 2 years younger) and it seems like the same failure - catastrophic rather than wearing out - just that i was going slowly and was practically at my house anyway.

manufacturing defects? i can't see how installing in the e30 would cause a problem. both were full of oil and weren't using a drop anyway and were otherwise in perfect health...

very strange isn't it. Now how much would it of cost bmw to fit the very handy oil pressure and temp guage somewhere on the sportier models? Hartge did.
