E30 manual boxes run on SAE 80W gear oil unlike E36> which use ATF.

80 is what is specified for an E30 box, but ATF is a well known (and acceptable) bodge for dealing with boxes that have a stiff gear change when cold.stuartgallafant wrote:iain, i thought they ran on that, but when i put 80 in my iS, it felt really notchy until the car had driven a few milesTempl8e30 wrote:E30 manual boxes run on SAE 80W gear oil unlike E36> which use ATF.

Steer clear of slick50, waste of money.bennyboy wrote:I have just changed my diff after the last one run dry. gonna change the oil next week end but which oil? its a 4,10 non lsd if that means anything. will slick50 gearbox treatment help?
Non-LSD diff oil is SAE 90w gear oil, get a well known brand.

It's supposed to be changed at every inspection 2 service iirc.
I change mine every 2 years, probably overkill but cheaper than having the diff rebuilt
