Complete 318iS running gear

As the next stage of my track car project is to source and install the M30 3.5 litre engine, I was wondering what to do with the 318iS running gear it'll be replacing.

As far as I can see, I will have spare: the engine, loom, gearbox, prop, diff and ECU, as well as all the engine ancilliaries. The engine itself has a large bore throttle body, K&N induction kit (though might keep this for the M30), stainless exhaust and a Viper chip. It's got all new air and water pipes too. The only thing that's not available is the radiator as it's a deep core unit and its brand new, never used (well 10 miles tops) and I reckon I could use this in the new project. It also has a new water pump and thermostat...

Shall I keep it all, or sell it on. If I sell it, how much is it all worth...?

M42 engines are Ԛ£500 at the bmw breakers, they have their own special gearbox too, so Ԛ£700 tops? Cheaper than buying a sh!tter iS innit?

sold my stuff with 60k on it all sweet as a1 condition inc rad and all ancillaries for Ԛ£600..... if that helps....

Does the M42 engine go in easyeir than the M20 or isnt there much difference?

They both have their problems, but getting a hold of IS parts is harder and more expensive,

an iS engine is only a tad bigger and 15kgs heavier than an M40 innit? but as you say finding the stuff is the hard part!

i'd love an iS , but as you peeps have said, reliability and expensive parts can be an issue.

Well, mine's got a water leak problem that needs fixing. Not got around to it yet, and would have it sorted before I lifted it from the car.

Would give everyone the chance to come and check it out before hand, but I can't see it being taken out much before October...

What kind of condition is the diff in? Mines whinning a little to much for my liking!

Diff is silent, though it's not an LSD.

Re: head I think one of the main things with the iS I've read on german sites is to let the engine warm up properly (keep under 3k if poss for 1st 10 mins) before reving the tits off it, as the head and block warm up at different rates being made from different materials.
Touch wood mines been OK so far.

giles, have you ever thought about using it to try and use it in a westfield type of kit car, use the engine, suspension etc, probably be able to do it reasonably cheaply if you already have the stuff

Erm, why would I want to do that when I'm creating a monster track car with the M30 anyway... all the suspension etc. needs to be kept on the E30 dude!

Done enough kit cars anyway, would rather modify a 'real' car for now... Besides, EVERYTHING on the track car has been done apart from the engine transplant... Roll on the summer!

Adam mate, i was thinking about putting my brothers IS lump in my motor, but i cant be arsed to be honest, too much hassel for not enough gain once i bought the engine off him. Id rather use my motor for another half a year, then on my 18th in Setpembet buy a nice IS and do some stuff to it. Im going to go down the route of a small supercharger i think, ive heard you can get ok results with units off of the mini cooper s and similar ones, plus lsd, TB, chip, full stainless exhuast etc.


I just cant be arsed to change engines dude lol,and id id have to change brakes and stuff as well
