hi guys,

wasn't sure where to post this but was at a drag day this evening in F112 GUG and ended up with the middleweight dragracing trophy! lol well pleased. ran a 15.28sec quater mile, beat a civic typeR and a vauxhall astra coupe turbo by at least 3 lengths...

was passed out tho by an e30 race car running a tweaked honda s2000 engine! fast animal... had him up until 3rd then passed me! raging. was also 0.3secs behind a 286bhp focus st

could have been faster with more practice i think...

great days fun tho!! heres the trophy

Image[/img]

mates got vids on their phones... will post them up when i get a hold of them!

@Andy - it was my first time on the strip... I'm sure the car can do better, i planned to fit the bbs 15's for the run but didn't have time so ran her on the 17's. The end of the 1/4mile runs into a bad sweeping right corner so I was a bit hesitant to go flat through as 2 people had spun off before me... 15.28 isn't far off the 14's anyways

@fuzzy - Yeah the guy races the e30 down there against scooby's and evo's! he was impressed by gug, sed he thot he was never gonna catch her. but fair does he had that bit more when it came to the finish line... will try and coax him onto the zone

will hopefully get the vids up tomorrow

Congrats SY - nice to hear of the infamous GUG - Funny how it has become a bit of a zone legend - even i know about it and i live in a different country and have never seen it in the flesh!
I wouldn't take Andy so personally mate - not to talk for him but i dont actually think he was out to insult you!
come on - a bend on a straight IS a strange thing no matter how you look at it!
And with a car that everyone knows so much about there is nothing wrong with 'expecting' a 14.
come on, people arent that bad and neither is the zone!!

Good work mate, must be really satisfying to come away with a trophy, especially as it sounds like a lot of the competition was newer cars!

Bit off topic, but it's interesting to hear that your car is an F-GUG. I've got one of those at the moment, a 325i convertible. I can guarantee it's not going to win any trophies though... in fact, its next (and final) journey is going to be to the scrapyard, poor thing! It must be the underacheiving cousin of your driftmobile!

@ kam - crept up beside me pal at the last min and snared a 0.2 sec quicker the clutch was going as i'd been around the drift circuit before hand... will get the rest of the vids up tonight

@ liam012 & Alyman - yeah i know its not really aimed against the car or myself... but people forget theres over 100k on the engine now and when karan/kam had it it was alot fresher/fitter. The quater mile is a bit ropey to say the least, nothing to what you guys are used to on the mainland. The stretch ends on a slight left hand turn (practically straight) but once your braking down it leads to a sharp right hand bend as its actually the starting straight for their race circuit, then doubles up as their drag strip after the racing!

Alyman - sorry to hear about your GUG, the scrap yard will be claiming another much loved e30 it would seem :(

thanks guys for the comments, and apologies to andy, just seems at times you can't win when people expect so much from it... its prob the driver holding it back more than anything

was nice to see how she went before i initiate anymore work to the car...

Do you guys not think that straight line santa pod stuff just kills clutches and is a total waste of time and effort?

given that where you play has HUUUGE straights, and mighty hills, i'm sure you can appreciate that summat like the GUG would provide a package for both straight line and twisty bits.

TBH, 1/4 mile is probably the longest the GUG has stayed in a straight line, karan always did like a windscreen he could roll down :D

excellent result fella

glad to hear the gug is still being used properly :D

northloop

yes the qtr is harsh on clutches
my last time at the pod the clutch seemed to stick at around 50 after a very hard
fast start so i had to abandon that run  sure it was gonna be my best run yet too

had a couple of pod days and been ok but last one really took its toll on the old girl
so new clutch very soon when i fit the 2.7

That is a quick car but personally I would hope for a bit better from a 335i.
It should be around 215 bhp with a standard engine (a bit less with loads of miles on I suppose) but I was getting just under that in an S13 Nissan 200sx which was dyno'd at 201 bhp at the flywheel and on budget tyres. They weigh about the same as an E30 too. :?

I'll have to see for myself when I get mine to the Pod! winkeye

If only our s13 with 270bhp wasn't so damn laggy, it might actually be good at a quarter mile. Oh and the pre facelift wheels on the rear of the car

ok guys here are the vids

- the gug matchin up against the s2000 e30 rally car, the commentary from my best mates should raise a smile if nothin else! lol the gug is closest to the camera when passing!

- the gug vs a honda typer civic with induction and full manifold back system - gug is pictured in the far lane this time

theres another of a race against an astra coupe turbo... but to be honest gug was that far infront it nearly wasn't fair 8O

the one against the st is near the top

hope you guys enjoy, thanks to all for the kind comments!

@ ian... everyone was mesmarised, people couldn't believe the car could do so well on the drag, the engine is amazing!! many thanks for building the engine pal!

I didn't actually build it myself. I had it built by Les Stannard (although I did fit the head and cam myself). The engine block is the original one from my Sport 8)

My last outing to Santa Pod saw a 13.8 to the 1/4, and that's fully loaded with interior and a full ice system etc :D

My current wagon. Don't think I ever drove GUG. I sold the engine to Ste who fitted it to GUG. Ste then sold GUG to his brother who then sold it to Karan.

those are some pretty good times but I am little surprised. I have a friend with a vauxhall corsa with a C20Xe 2.0ltr 16v in it and that will do a 14.4 all day long. It is however stripped to the nuts, excellent suspension, roll cage for structural stability and a nut case for a driver. I would have expected to see a 335i go a bit quicker. I saw a 335i avec NOS there a while back that was decimating all... made a noise like no other and OMG what acceleration!

And that 14.4 second Corsa... That is indeed an e34 535i next to him as well!

those are good vids pal,

would like to get gug to the pod, people tell me the surface for dragging is unreal, whereas the surface i was racing on was poss not he most ideal, also is it true the POD doesn't take into account your reaction time?

Being the frist time at it I'm sure there is room for improvement, once the green light is on thats your time started at aghadoey

Correct pod doesnt take account of the reaction time.

Its measuring the quarter mile not how fast you react.

My slips didn't have reaction times on either.
I thought they only did that in the competition stuff not the Run What You Brung ! ?

It's surprising how hard it is to get a very good time for the car your'e driving.
Too much wheelspin kills the time, as does crawling away from the line like a granny!

1500rpm launch worked well for me as well as keeping a keen eye on the rpm's so you don't run into the rev limiter, 6k 1st and 2nd, 5.5k 3rd, let it run till the line in 4th
