Guys

I have now decided to turbo my 325i. I have some experience having turbo charged a ford pinto engine in the past but would appreciate any advice that is available? Any good threads I can view or how to do it guides on here?

Can you let me know where I can get an m20 turbo manifold and what turbo's will fit?

Thanks

Harvey

mine is a standard 325i manifold which has been flipped and an adaptor to fit t3 turbo,,, works very well and least expensive

good thread to read...

thers a good bloke on here by the name of Ant(a-tech)for management/turboing .most people on here fab there own manifolds...turbo brown is about to get some t3 flanges and m20 exhaust flanges etc...

also im sure blingsta will tell you of his pitfalls during his recent experiences

engine is good for boosting with no internal work, but fit non stretch headbolts(12.9)are advisable before hand...
standalone management,decent turbo-not to small,bigger injectors.....etc etc..

there are chinese manifolds in 304 stainless in a equal length 6-2-1 design for about £350 will fit any T3 flanged turbo, mild steel high flow PPF (swedish) manifolds for about £550 and you can choose T3 or T4, jon volk 666 equal length stainless manifolds from america im not sure of price or flanges available but he has website with it on, if you have a LHD car there is also a bottom mount log manifold which i think is about £300 and fits T3

thanks fellas!

Whats sort of boost are you running with standard internals?

Do people use decompression plates or are there some thicker gaskets which hold a bit of boost? Anyone used a farraday engineering copper gasket on the M20?

ive used the oversized gasket from bmw, although ferriday engineering can supply all you need, stock internals i believe are good for upto 350bhp, mines currently 7.5psi on a garrett t3 with no issues.

What do you see torque and bhp wise from your half bar of boost? How about fueling, do you use extra injector or on boost pressure fueling set-up or 'full on' management with higher flowing injectors etc?

Sorry for the million questions

megasquirt management supplied and fitted courtesy of Ant (Atech), with 42" injectors, bhp is 195 but torque is 225lb, the car feels great but those figures should be +10 with new zaust coming soon... winkeye

cometic make thick MLS gaskets for the m20, ive heard copper gaskets arent that good for road cars, the best you can do is have the water channels in head welded up and orings on block but you dont need that unless you go over 1bar. some people have run over 2 bar on stock crank, rods and pistons

I have used cometic gaskets on my ford turbo engine and they are pretty good but expensive!

This is a pic of my pinto turbo install, running 10 psi, about 8.5 psi held and this gives me 183 bhp from a 2.0 pinto running low compression cossie pistons, standard but well ballanced crank and rods and a well ported stage 3 head. As you can see I run this with twin 45 dellortos and have no underfueling throughout the whole rev range which is pretty good for carbs! :-)

This is the car the engine is in :-)

Just want a nice bit of torque. I would be happy running half bar of boost so I guess I wont be into mega power (from a 325i) but will probably take the head off and see if I can clean up the flow a bit, has anyone done some headwork and is it worth it or does the head flow ok allready?

Finally, what experience is there around cams and turbo charging? Standard or are there better profiles?

i don't think anyones used bigger cams with a turbo due to overlap but theres a first for everything

yes they have all the swedes use NA cams, im using a custom grind which is basicly a 272 NA cam with abit less overlap, but the stock cam is fine upto 350hp anyway

Think if you wanted mege power you would want a hairy cam but the standard one's fine for what you're talking about :)

These engines can make good power given generous enough flow paths, mine made 270bhp and 240lbft on 7psi, and the power was still rising at 6260rpm where the injectors ran out of go :)

Anyhoo, if you do want a set of cylinder head flanges to make your own manifold I'll be organising a group buy pretty soon, it's in this section somewhere :)

head flows fine just leave it, you want megasquirt, non stretch head bolts, volvo intercooler, cossie turbo, exhaust mani is abit awkward so sort that out first.

324td Manifold is up there with the easiest/most cost effective option for a resonable set up dude, good upto 300hp or so i've heard, which should suit your application fine.

Think in terms of price the flipped manifolds are pretty effective, but I gather there's a lot of work involved in realigning the ports and modifying the mounting holes.

If you can weld yourself and get the component parts, you should be able to make on for less than a couple of hundred quid.
