Anyone here ever used the oil level sensor hole as an oil drain?

Thinking of using it on my conversion. I know I'll have to run the oil line around the front of the block but there will still be a fair difference in height between the oil leaving the turbo and entering the sump.

Looks nice and easy to do, just knock up a plate the same size as the one that holds the oil sensor and pop in a hose fitting.

Anyway, gonna give it a go and see what happens. Will use some clear hose to start with so I can keep an eye on the oil flow whilst the engine is running.

Just seems a lot less hassle than groveling around under the car trying to get the sump off.

Should be plenty of fall as you say so draining the oil wouldn't be a problem, but that sensor saved my engine when an oil leak made the light come on as I was on the M25 so if it were me, I'd drop the sump and do something like this....

I used a plate inside the sump and some nyloc nuts but you could probably get away without the plate.

Toby, never seen this picture before, does it still "work" even though its angled down?

I wouldn't use the oil level sensor for the reason alex pointed out, although if you have an oil pressure gauge you would see the fault developing, but i'm not sure if it would be too late. Also i don't know if there is enough downwards flow if you have to take it round the front of the engine. I would just take the sump off, its not "too" bad.

old gasket trial fitting.

jon, there's a very long drop down from my turbo as it's so high, that little hill at the end doesn;t seem to make any difference.

Cheers for the advice, was going to fit an oil pressure gauge anyway as don't really trust those sensor level things. I'll give it a go and seeing what happens, if it proves inadequate I'll drag me lazy arse under the car and remove the sump.
