How far do people go before telling their insurance company about modifications? For example i am going to lower my car soon and am unsure how the insurance company will take it, this come after speaking to mate who could not get insurance after putting spax on his fiesta.

I am a young driver by the way. :)

best just speaking to your existing insurer and say "i'm thinking of lowering" what'll it cost.

Different insurers react differently, but on an obvious mod to the naked eye, it's always best to declare it. Internal mods like a cam or a chip, i wouldn't bother saying

Definately declare it mate, if you have an accident they will go over your car with a fine toothed comb, any excuse not to pay out and they wont!

What car are you driving and how old are you? The extra shouldnt be too much £Â£

how young is young?

Under 20 and your unlikey to get a decent qoute for ANY modifications. Unless you go to a specialist broker.

I had a similar problem I was 6 months into a policy, and the company I was with wanted to bust my balls for lowering the car, a specialist company under written by my insurer would actually qoute me for a year on the lowered car cheaper than the company I was with for a standard car.

Funnily enough though they didn't insure standard cars so I had no insurance for a few days while I got the car lowered and then went with the specialist company. Just do a google search for modified car insurance, most companies will now qoute online for modifications too.

Mine is now covered for anything over 15mm drop over standard and unlimited engine mods provided the power output does not exceed 10% over original specs. so on a 17 year old M20 engine I can get it to approx 190bhp withought having to change my policy and at its age its probably running 150-160 in standard form anyway so quite some scope for mods. All for £430 Fully comp. 24 years old, no accidents, 3 points (SP50), 6 years NCB, £2k declared value, 325i Sport.

Not bad as my 1.8 crapalier in standard form is £340 TPFT.

Give these guys a call http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/?gclid=CODE ... MAodp2Tpiw

They quoted me £10 more than my previous insurers who would not insure a modified car. My car has 60/40 drop, KW suspension, H&S anti roll bars, strut brace, E30Zone chip, Hartge alloy wheels

Go to a specialist custom car insurer, its not as much as you would have thought especially if you have invested time effort and money into it.

There are two types of broker and insurance company, a sympathetic one and non-sympathetic. A sympathetic broker won't come along with a box of tissues if you crash your car but they can make decisions withought the aid of a computer. Non sympathetic companies simply do what a computer tells them with no room to budge.

Find the right company with a good ethos who recognse what your car means to you, and they won't bust your balls come insurance time.

My advise would be not to modifiy your car,the E30 is cool as it is,if you want to mod it wait a few years.
If you go ahead anyway, you MUST inform your insurer, these guys are programmed to take your money and not give it back,if they find the slightest mod on your car they simply won't pay out.
IMHO it's not worth taking the chance on hoping they won't notice if you have a prang.
I bought a mini bus once and removed the seats so it could be used as a van, guess what the insurer said?? thats got to go in the modified vehicle catagory!

Also suggest trying performancedirect.co.uk, ended up pretty cheap with all mods declared.

Really? I didn't realise it was so strict. I havent declared M3 leathers, tech 2 wheel, sound system, eyebrows, indicators, repeators, 15" BBS, i didnt think this was an issue? I may have to review it now.

I would definately declare them.

When i first got my M3 (19 with 3 years ncb), my insurance only went up by £75 for declaring suspension, exhaust and alloy wheels.

Definately worth doing IMO
