Using a little bit of basic physics you can prove one thing in this case, as the old saying goes; "There's one born every minute"

Guys, a supercharger that gives a moderate boost in power soaks up about 15 - 20 bhp per litre of engine capacity.
This is a 3 hp motor;
Image
It weighs 31kg and runs at 14 amps, more than most alternateors can cope with for long periods.
How some people can fall for this crap I dont know, but like I said above, theres one born every minute!!

Argos are selling hairdryers from £9.99 upwards :teehee:

Surely people don't buy these? I'm no physicist and I'm damn well surprised I can even spell it but anyone who spends £100+ on this needs a one way ticket to the funny farm.

I really can't beleive it went for that much!!!!!!!

I took a look at the winners other purchases in case he was a set-up. No, he just buys an awful lot of tat for his chavved up E36.

And loads of Disney stuff.

Yamoda: You make a good point about the motor size but not quite accurate.. Energy is released from the air/fuel via a chemical reaction, so the power required to pump the air isn't directly proportional to the increase in power output of the engine - if you catch my drift. A turbo charger requires 'x' amount of power to compress charge (using wasted energy from exhaust or directly from crank) but the net effect is a higher increase of power due to the fact it takes less energy to pump the extra charge in than it releases during combustion. Don't get me wrong, that ebay tripe is still pointless and you'd need a massive motor to get decent boost; as you implied.

Some guy from a jap mag (Banzai or Japanese performance can't remember which) fitted one to his MR2 a while back and did a dyno run. He said the force of it was like the force of a computer fan, lol.
Anyway, the dyno run showed that the car actually lost power due to the fan actually restricting air getting to the engine.

This "Device" is a supercharger not a turbocharger, the power needed to drive either is calculated differently. The figure I quoted is from figures that Mercedes and Jaguar released regarding thier blown engines, The Merc 220 Kompressor soakes up about 40 bhp and the Jag 4.0 used in the XKR and XJR uses about 80 bhp. Of course the increases each provides is greater than the amount they soak up, hence the increase in overall power.

superchargers use more engine power, as they're driven directly off the engine. hence, when you have air-con switched on, your engine suffers efficiency, and so forth.

considerable s'chargers, take about 15 - 30% of the engines power to operate them, depending on size, strength and power of the engine in the first place. however, s'chargers will provide upto 50% more power overall.

so, if it says its a 50% power gain, its gonna take 20% of the engines power to drive it, therefore, a 30% power gain is achieved (just an example!)

this thing advertised, is clearly NEVER going to work!

and cliffy, i assume your talking about the crying guy who tried to scratch your eyes out on holiday?!

yeah a leaf blower which was running from a 240V 13 amp power suppply so it wasnt taking any power away from engine to start with, that didi give about 10-15hp and then after that they used leaft blower and squirted NOS into it and got about 30-40hp which is probly the bit you remember. its was on quite a small engine aswell i think like 1.4 or 1.6, doubt it would even make 5 hp at flywheel on a M20

Hmmm... not so sure, it's not the usual crappy computer fan. Those ducted fans shift a serious amount of air in a model aircraft at 8.4V, 100+ mph is not unusual for the more powerful ones  At 14 or so volts in a car it'd be producing ~2.5 times the power it would in a model 'plane.

I must confess I'm surprised but unless you have a good reason to doubt the honesty of the linked 'site it doesn't seem unreasonable that he would get some small gain.

I doubt the electric motor will last long abused like that though.

I don't however believe the ebay 'systems' are anything but a fraud.

Only snag is, it only cuts in at full throttle by the sounds of it - I see he has only given peak power graphs...at part throttle, I guess it would cause restriction hence power/torque losses. Interesting experiment though!

who cares? none of us are stupid enough to buy it,

and hes more than likely made a nice tidy sum from it,

if people are really stupid enough to fall for it, it's their problem!

jesus its back in a new form

Iremember these a while back (8 years ish) they where just electric fans with a good looking cases.

They will just restrict power. these were out with the vortex thing that you put in a turbo car to mix the air up more.
same thing just blocks air intake waste of time and money in my opinion.

Rich

Oh and anything that says more power and better/the same feul are a load of s**t. nothing can do this!
