I have just embarked on the same conversion, so this will make interesting reading - mine will take much longer as I can't dedicate all funds to it immediately, will be a slow burner!
Im chuffed to bits though that I am on my way!

i dont like that method of mounting.

prefer to have the engine sitting on the mount on the crossmember

According to a 1992 BMW press pack, the fully dressed M60 weighs 447 lbs/202.75 kilos. The bare block weighs 55lbs, the heads 65lbs each.
For comparison a 5 litre M70 V12 weighs 529lbs/239 kilos. I think the S50 engine weighs about 235 kilos too, and that's a heavy bastard.

The autobox on an E32 730i V8 is a 5 speed, the A5S310Z with the 0.74 overdrive fifth. In comparison a five speed manual V8 box has a direct drive non overdrive fifth so you'll need a nice tall diff to cope - a 3.25 M3 diff will be ideal. The six speed units on the 540i and 840i used the same ratios but with an overdrive sixth.

I've driven a couple of M30 engined E30's. One was Andy 335i's green Touring and the other an Alpina B6S (M3 based) and both were fine. Possibly you might feel the extra weight on the very tightest of corners but corners are just the bits that link the straights! Both cars would destroy an E30 M3 in a straight line and Andy's Touring was the faster car out of the two. The B6S 3.5 was overgeared. The nose heavy M30 bollocks comes from the original Alpina conversions where the engine was sat so far forward they had to make a special small rad to fit within the front panel. They're still not THAT bad. I drove an original RHD B6 2.8 and thought it was okay. I also drove an E36 Coupe fitted with a 4 litre M60 (with a five speed 3.0 box) and that was fine despite being an absolute abortion of a conversion. To get the engine to fit, the clowns who did the conversion fitted spacers between the chassis legs and the front crossmember!

I might be breaking a manual 530i soon - about £600 for the engine and manual 5 speed gearbox. winkeye

Yeah, you drove it with the two different ratio diff's, the 3.25 then the 3.64 when the photo's were taken, as you suggested after the drive with the 3.64 i still need to get a 3.46 fitted.

Just too sort of echo what you were saying about the 335's handling, going from being M20 powered to M30 powered E30 you will struggle to feel a difference but the feeling will be slightly more pronounced if your E30 started off as a 4 pot.

M60 swap will be cool, plenty of torque and the wieght sits further back than the inline 6's.

I still fancy an LS2 or LS6 V8 for mine, or if i have a win on the scratchys :) an LS7

Finally found some time to do a little bit .

Managed to mod the existing manifolds for the nearside today.

Offside is a different ball game but i've got a plan and hopefully will be done on Sunday.

Will be making new tubular ones next year but these will do for now as i'm skint.

Hope to get the engine in and running in the next 10 days ( weather permitting)

offside manifolds are no laughing matter though mate! plus you've got the added bonus of missing the steering column.

All in good time my man.

Finished the offside manifold just now. Not pretty but it'll do for now and i'll use it to make a jig when i make my tube ones later this year.

Should get the engine and box popped in again tomorrow and hopefully get my engine mounts finished.

Then i'm doin the fuel lines and going see if it'll run.

This is the box here . ( sorry pic is rubbish)
Apparently same box and internals as e36 3.0 m3 just a different bellhousing

Gearbox is surprisingly light.

The auto box on the other hand may be the heaviest gearbox in the world.

i think the m40 engine that i removed was lighter than this gearbox and smaller as well . its a beast of thing.

Any chance of seeing some pics of the engine mounts you are making, when they are done?
Also, do you have to change fuel pumps or is the one for the M40 ok?

no probs m8 .

No idea on the fuel pump but i'll change it if i need to.

Moment of sadness today.

Engine and box back in but someone cant measure properly and the manifold is touching the steering.

Just need to do it again :x

i'm goin to finish the mounts first then get it fired up.

Then i'll sort the exhaust problem.

On a plus side a m8 is giving me all the exhaust tubing i need and a pair of cheery bomb type silencers for 50 notes .

It'll be loud

The injector rail of a M60 runs only 0.5bar more than the E30 so from that i would expect the E30 stock pump to be upto the job!

finally got a bit of reasonable weather this afternoon.

Engine mounts now fiinished :D

will be the weekend before i can fit them as i have lost a couple of imporant seals that go behind the original nearside mount which will be left on due to bmw's ingenious design.

Both oil lines from the remote filter actually pass through the nearside engine mount . very bizarre
