how do all,
i've got a 318is and my engine is running okay no fault codes etc but is a little down on power (170,000 miles). i can feel a rebuild would do her good but thinking if i do that why not do something else instead?
i was thinking maybe a red top? anyone done this? oh and as it's a night event car i can't have anything over 4 cylinder or any forced induction (turbo / supercharger).
or am i better off putting a set of cams/chip/bbtb and rebuilding her?

4 cylinder - no forced induction - rear wheel drive.

How about a Honda S2000 lump?

Revs to 20 million rpm, 237bhp standard and being Honda probably very reliable!
Only downside is 153 lb/ft of torque (still not that bad mind) so need to keep the V-tec buzzing!

That would be a right weapon! winkeye

red top would be good and then you can always turbo it if you want.

Rice turbo transplant , SR20DET swop is well documeneted on the net.

the M42 is not a bad engine, but a rebuild is costly due to the sheer cost of the required parts.

FI ing the M42 presents no nightmares apart from the sodium exhaust valves, I'd swop for one piece stainless just to be safe.

XE, well my Astra 16V on 48's made 221 HP , but it was an unrelible heap TBH.

Zetec are proven and cheap, easy RWD swop option too

Hmm, tempted myself

hum what about the amazing Mi16?

great revvy 160bhp and a nice tunable engine. everyone loves them!
the do a 4 wheel drive version on the 405 so i guess (just a guess) a fit to rear drive is possible?

i love that engine! made my pug faster than my 325i and much more erratic! - think that was the dangerous 205. :D

The Mi16x4 still had the engine in transversely so unless you did that and somehow lost the front driveshafts it'd be a bugger to make RWD.

Wicked engines though, streets ahead of the Zetec in terms of pretty much everything! Just a pain to convert to RWD :(

i wonder if the RWD pug 505 gearbox would fit a Mi16...? it's got a strange prop setup though as far as i can remember.

Isn't there an Audi 100 box(or something Audi) that many Lotus 7 style cars use with the MI16 engine for some rwd action??

have read something about a torque converter being needed? Mi is a great lump but reckon it would be a mission to get into an e30 engine bay as you would need to git rid of basically everything inthe e30 bay; especially a 318is bay which doesnt have dizzy cap etc that the pug will; unless you made the bmw front wheel drive! 8O

XE lumps are great; a guy at my old college built one and it looked to be fairly well constructed; my dad had one in a chavalier once (before they were chav) and it was forever breaking down

s2000 unit; how much will that be!

Night rally car? What regs are you running under that allow engine swaps from other manufacturers? I guess it's not that odd, we're allowed to run 6 pots, turbos and V8s by the scrutineers but not allowed twin choke carbs/TBs

Surely something nice and short would be ideal to get the sump up well off the ground (assuming your events are as rough as ours!). Red top Vaxhaul would be a good choice for simplicity as well, loads of cheap bellhousing and gearbox choices.

S2000 lump would be awesome but something with a bit more torque might be more useful. Are you sure you're not allowed 6pots?

Civic type R, 2.2 Prelude? Again, lack torque and complex. Big and simple would be the way I'd go.

Pug S16? No idea what you'd do for a gearbox or sump but it's a strong motor.

hi all, loads of replies i see, not too fussed on the mi16 swap as seems like lots of work with not many bits around to start with and i'd like to keep the engine reasonably in common with the other cars for spares etc. as for s2000 lump wow i'd love one rev higher than a japanese mans salary in yen, and sound sweet but alas cost's about as much too. defo not allowed six cylinder or forced induction tho and making it front wheel drive!!! wash your mouth out!! at once. the red top idea i like best but in the future perhaps i'd have trouble with scrutineering having a non standard engine so maybe i should tune the is instead? does anyone know how to make it rev more for a starter?

I'm a really big fan of the Zetec and XE but recently have been well into the idea of a Duratec (I nearly bought a Nissan SR20DET for mine before the S50B32 but that won't do for you). Jap engines (being RHD) often have the manifolds on the 'right side'. S2000 engines and gearboxes go for aroud 2.5-3K. The Toyota 3SGE engine (any generation) is absolutely fantastic but again, you'll have to get a bellhousing for RWD.

Duratecs are set to be the best low budget engine in future I'd say, with brand new engines only £1200! (scrap yard Ford galaxy people carriers having the 2.3 engine and those people can't usually drive so theres bound to be loads written off!). Zetecs being ultra cheap and quite powerful option.

Run it on mega squirt, retro ford thermostat housing and bell housing and wahey!

Good luck hombré.

What about an S14 lump - might be able to get around the non-standard engine regs as its still a BM engine.
