FAO ian332i sport .I have been told your the man to speak to about wiring . I am doing e30 m3 s14 engine swap, putting in a 95 e36 m3 s50 3L I have got the engine harness plugs off both looms to make a connecting harness from the new engine to the car. Can you give me a list or tell me which pin does what, and how to connect them together.
Will everything still work as normal on the instrument cluster after the wiring has been done?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Sam,

I'm back now (arrived home yesterday morning), but was over in your part of the world driving around New Zealand in a camper van for 3 weeks (1 week on the North island and 2 on the South). I also popped over to the West island (Australia :D ) for a few days on the way home 8)

Orr,

I'm guessing Andy (Buster) has provided the pin connections for the 3.2 Evo engine. If this is the case, then it may not be 100% accurate.

If you can let me know the wire colours and pin numbers on the E36 engine connector, and the same for the E30 body connector, I can do you an accurate connection chart.

Cheers,

Ian.

Orr,

Thanks for the pin details, but can you confirm a couple of things.

1. What year is the E30 M3, and are those pin details from the car side of the 20 pin connector ? It looks like the engine side going by the colours, but I really need the car side which are a bit different.

For the record, the resistor across pin 2 & 10 is to trick the check control unit into thinking the oil level is okay. The M3 never had an oil level sensor fitted, so the resistor was used to avoid a constant oil level error on the check control unit.

2. What year is the E36 M3 ?

Cheers,

Ian.

Hi Ian
It is a 1990 M3 and this is the car side! The other ones were the engine but the E36 ones were for the body!
I have just taken my timing case off to renew the front crank seal and the right hand side slide rail that the chain runs in between is lose because the bolts that hold it in place are broken! Has enyone else had this problem and what do you think has caused it and will it have caused the chain to move? Not happy!! :x

Orr,

I've got your wiring charts ready, but they are in Excel format. If you can PM me an email address, I'll send them over.

Cheers,

Ian.

Thanks dan. ian my sister has sent you my email address not very good on the computer yet, just been looking at the spec of your car looks great .Do you think i will mess up the handling of my M3 a bit wooried i will not like it when its done. The car is like new as i have it in the garage all the time, but i have had it 8 years now and am bored with the performance. 220bhp. Heared a lot of bottom end problems with the E36 M3. Went to renew the front crankseal , on the E36 while it is still out of the car and when i removed the front timming cover the right hand side timming chain guide rail was loose, the bolts that hold it in place had sheared. Ever heard of this happening? :x :x Thanks for all your help mate.

Orr,

No, I don't think it will mess up the handling. I helped another guy with a similar conversion (using the 3.2 Evo engine) in an E30 M3, and he's not noticed any difference. If it was a competition or track day car, you may notice a small difference on the limit, but on the road you won't tell the difference at all.

I have heard the odd story about bottom end problems, but that was aimed more at the 3.2 Evo than the 3.0L engines. Even then, it's not that common and can be stopped from happening by fitting ARP rod bolts.

Can't say I've ever heard of problems with the timing chain or guides. Apart from the rod bolt issue mentioned above, and Vanos on the 3.2 Evo engine, they don't have any inherent problems to speak of.
