my sump gasket is buggered...

so how do i go about changing it on my m20 and how much is a new gasket from the dealer aswell as the rear crank seal... as i will do this while i am there.....

and ask for a bottom end set. Mine was Ԛ£30.45 for the M20

The sump gasket from BMW is around Ԛ£11. The rear crank seal is Ԛ£30.

thanks demlot and turbo dude.....!!

any ideas if i need to lift the engine slightly? and if i just wanna change the sump gasket what exactly do i need to remove.... as the sump is in 2 parts i think...... :mad: do i remove the bell housing bit then remove the actual sump???

heeeeeeelp as i need to do this...

Hi Karan, I have'nt changed one on the car before but the cover is bolted to the bellhousing with torx head bolts and this needs to be removed first.

Then remove the 2 million sump bolts, I would imagine that the sump is a b!tch to remove on the car as it sits quite close to the subframe and the oil pump live quite low down into the bulge.

Use a little gasket sealant on refitting, mine is completely leak free now.

GSF sell Elring gaskets and seals the same as the genuine ones, I think the sump gasket is about Ԛ£4 and the rear crank oil seal is around Ԛ£7.

just went to ecp and got one for Ԛ£3.45!

result! lets hope it lasts....

has anyone ever changed one on the m20 in situl.....

i do have a hoist so i can lift it if needs be to clear the oil pickup thingy... got some gasket sealant while i was there too.....

will do rear crank seal as a matter of course when i change my gbox and linkages...

sump is okay but not easy.

You will need to get all the bolts then lift the engine up, then let the sump drop down, you will see the pick up, you will then need to stick your hand in and undo it with the sump still under the block.

Now do not pull down on the sump if it doesnt fall off with a few taps then you have not taken all the bolts out!

You will need a paint stripper type of scalpel tool to get the old gasket off.

not done this engine myself karan,
but would have guessed it can be done in situ.
undo the engine mounting bolts but not all the way, you should be able to lift the engine enough then but you dont want it to come off the bolts on the engine mountings if you can help it.

hmmmm the m5 lump is still in the m5 hahahhahahah (it is ready to be lifted though...-just no space to put it somewhere..... so thought id leave it in car until all brakes (hydraulic stuff) and e36 rack were in place and all suspension on....

cos i'm always too busy fixing this damn sport!!! lol


i too am beginner with these m20s.... so was just wondering if id really HAVE to remove the oil pickup....

i used to really enjoy working on my cars.... but with regular maintenance type stuff i really cant be arsed and dont enjoy it!!!! with fitting uprated stuff and hartge anti-roll bars (last week) there's always something to look forward to at the end..... not the case with fixing leaks :cry:

as for the e30///M5, as im doing it with my dad, he is being lazy and not doing much on it..... although he has promised he is gonna start helping.. this weekend...im still stripping and painiting m3 suspoension bits...VERY boring... and today with the rain i really couldnt be bothered with even going outside.....hahahaha

can u get some pics of ure manifold progress up dude! this is one thing i'll have to pay out for and pay the pros to do......


r u using priginal parts and just chopping and rerouting here and there or u going from scratch?

the pick up is on two 10mm bolts and needs to come off or the pan will not slide out.

karan mate, i can hardly get my hands in there with the manifolds, let alone a camera 8O .
when i get it on a lift , will take some pics of it then.
there wasn't much room when they were on the e39,
but now they look like someones spleen.
i now have about 20x 1 inch pieces 8)
when i get it finished (hopefully this year sometime !!) i will have to take it up your neck of the woods for you to have a look at :wink:

im at uni in bristol and id love to pop by some time and see it... im back in bristol in 2 weeks... in london on hols at the moment...

in fact i'll be popping round cardiff to pick up an e30 m3 exhaust rear section in the not so didtant future... :cool:

(thead jack) does the m3 box fit the 325i !!!?

I lost a washer down an oil gallery while working on the head of my m20, I had to get the sump off but instead of pulling the bastard all the way out I just lifted the motor, droped the sump so it rested on the crossmember then slowly put the gasket on buy guiding it under the oil pump. Basicly I had no need to take the oil pump off.

Did mine not to long ago and it can be removed without removing the oil pick up,I loosened the engine mounts and jacked the whole block up with a scissor jack and packed it with woods to secure it, then you can slide the sump out without too much difficulty,you then have enough space that you can clean the mating surface off, put some grease on to hold the new gasket in place,then re-assemble the whole shooting match,heres to your success m8,Boss

ok took that bell housing bit off today to reveal that all the sump bolts underneath had fallen off...... and were not there-would explain the leak!!!

so put new bolts in and tightened them all up.... seems fine now...

prob cam loose dut to my gbox xmember being loose for a while and giving a vibration... my tps had also become loose causing idle problems a couple weeks ago....

will see tmro if she still leaks...
