Lads

What are your views on welded diffs i no there set backs but i have never driven RWD with a welded diff and want to no what you all think.
Reason is i am getting my car ready for the D1 drifting in 2006 so
i nned to no weather to go LSD or weld it up :D

If you need to use the car for road use a welded diff' is a nightmare, :( if not, it's ideal and cheap. 8)

ive picked up the following bout welded diffs....

its great, but in wet u can understeer on mini roundabouts etc,,, and can be dodgy on long corners... in the dry u should be ok'ish' u can fit narrower tyres on the rear to help.... u will start eating tyres at a HIGH rate aswel.......

good but u wont really enjoy ure car...

get an lsd for road use.. and get a spare diff and weld this up and fit it for events...... they can be changed in 2 hours pretty easily....

A welded diff is a great way to learn car control real quick / smash lots of chariots !.

You need to ask Julian (D1 drift champ i think??) - pacerpete's mate, his welded diff will allow him to drift with ease along your window box if required - but you'll find it scrubbing the inner wheel on each turn quite bad.

I welded the dif up on my old Auto grass Mk2 Escort,as said no good for the road.

I used a square(rectangle) of thick metal and used lots of weld ,not like that picture,he's not welded it very well ? :?

Dunno mate, the guys who did the M3 repair manual seem to know what they are doing and Also Pacer said the same when i asked him so i think its the correct way of doing it.

Oh yeah looks proper,i probobly just went over the top with the amount of weld i used on the old Mk2

So what's the score then, the prop moves and the driveshafts move with it regardless?

What exactly do you weld up, and how do the gears in the diff move? Surely something has to move to transfer the power from the prop to the driveshafts?

Surely something would snap in the long run?!

Tempting to get an old open diff and weld it up!

u weld all gears together apart from teh crown wheel and pinion...

i doubt it would break if done properly


i feel a welded diff coming on

You just weld up the iner small gears like in the pic,the big gears still move and transfer the power from the prop to the drive shafts.

Just take your spare dif to a garaged to be welded,won't cost much as it's not a big job with the dif off the car.

Only car I ever drove with a welded diff was a 2.0 Sierra. It was great fun though as you couldnt help going sideways and you could just hang the ass out all day. :)
For normal road use though it would be no good.
