Wiring loom help please 318i to M30
Moderator: martauto
Someone told ne you can plug a 320i/325i M20 engine loom onto an E34/E32 3.5 M30. Thinking about it, he could be right. Six injectors, crank sensor, two coolant temp sensors up top etc. If something didn't quite reach it wouldn't be beyond the wit of man to cut and solder in an extension. The 735i ECU plugs into an M20 loom okay (I plugged a 730i into a 325i Touring the other day to test it) and the resulting loom would plug straight into the E30 C101 and go through the bulkhead as standard.
Now I've not seen or tried this but it sounds plausible. The TDC sensor is on the same side and the only thing I can see as being in the wrong pace is the air flow meter. Whaddya reckon?

I used a M20 loom, all you have to do is cut open the loom cover and move the afm and tps wires about,
also the oil pressure wire as well, everything else fals into place.

about the same amount of mods to the loom but it needs to be swapped between engines. my loom stayed intact on the M30 and went in fully dressed with manifolds and everything!

Post '88 M30 loom has the same ECU connector and connections as the M20, so the loom can be used. It's got to be easier to move a couple of wires in the M30 C101, though, than extending or re-wrapping loom wires though.
The black/purple wire that was originally on pin 8 of the M30 C101 is probably the anti-theft connection to pin 38 of the ECU. Could be used to make an effective immobiliser to protect your investment.

Well it took about 3minutes to make the M20 loom 100% compatible with the M30 engine, no messing with the C101 plug at all,Brianmoooore wrote:Post '88 M30 loom has the same ECU connector and connections as the M20, so the loom can be used. Ok it was a combination of a sticky starter (2 off) and a new battery that was only putting out 11.7 volts and didn't have enough umph to unstick the starter

mine coughs and sputters a little on startup. without an exhaust it'll make a lot more noise!

I found that my M30 does fuel heavily on start up.
I severely flooded mine a couple of times with running for short periods!
Been fine since I've been driving it though.

Experiment with a resistor of a few thousand ohms connected across the wires to the blue temp sender.DRIFTBOY wrote:I found that my M30 does fuel heavily on start up.

the opposite of one of those "power resistor" kits on ebay!
suppose i could have a cold mixture pot on the dash if i wanted with fairly little effort.
i wonder how much difference the ecu temp gauge input can make to the mixture?

Cold enrichment can be quite a big %, this is my cold enrich' correction table, i don't know how this would compare with the standard ECU though ?gareth wrote: i wonder how much difference the ecu temp gauge input can make to the mixture?

Hi guys
The car is up and running and a lot more together now.
So far i havn't changed any wires over in the plug and everything bar the heater fan is working. Can someone tell me again exactly what to do to get this working please?
Cheers Spadge..

The black/green on pin 15 of the E30 plug needs to go to the smallest terminal on the starter motor.
My M30 wiring diagram shows a black/green from the starter motor which goes to the M30 plug, but the diagram doesn't give the pin number, and I don't think you had a black/green listed for the M30 plug.

Earth the black/green on pin 15 and see if that brings the fan to life. (not while it's connected to the starter motor). Unplug the C101 to do it.SPADGE wrote:Well i tried that and it made no difference to anything Brian.Brianmoooore wrote:The black/green on pin 15 of the E30 plug needs to go to the smallest terminal on the starter motor.

Speed signal for speed sensitive radio volume usually. Goes to a pin on the ISO radio connector fitted to late E30s.SPADGE wrote:Also do you know what the single blue wire does on the back of a 318i clock set? It plugs into a green block on the back of the dash??

Interesting. Do you think you could wire it up for a normal stereo?Brianmoooore wrote:Speed signal for speed sensitive radio volume usually. Well Brian i tried your last suggestion and put an earth to pin 15 on the E30 socket and it made no difference. After i removed the wire and plugged the loom back in and then switched the ignition back on the fan worked though
Its worked ever since so i don't know if it was just stuck as the car hasn't been used for about 8 months or what

I tried it 1st without the ignition on and when nothing happened i took the wire out of pin 15 and switched the igniton on. I then noticed before connecting the wire again that the fan had started to work! Strange but true lolBrianmoooore wrote:You did turn the ignition on, didn't you?SPADGE wrote:Well Brian i tried your last suggestion and put an earth to pin 15 on the E30 socket and it made no difference.

With nothing connected to pin 15, then the fan (+ the windows and roof, door closed) shouldn't work at all.

Maybe the door was open before i re-connected the loom but i tried it with the door shut and it worked as well. Everything seems to function as it should now anyway except the ABS light is staying on! I wonder if that is something to do with the white plug coming off the engine loom that was connected to the wiring to the abs ecu on the e34? Its a small white plug with 4 wires going to it which are red, black/green, black/white, black/blue.Brianmoooore wrote:With nothing connected to pin 15, then the fan (+ the windows and roof, door closed) shouldn't work at all.

my ABS light has been on since putting the M30 in, but then i only noticed there wasn't a bulb fitted when i was fitting the m30 ecu in!

This plug that i am talking about Gareth was on the ecu end of the engine wiring loom and plugged into the wiring going into the abs brain which is along side it in the ecu box thing under the bonnet. I'm thinking it must be there for a reason. I bought my 318 with a fecked engine and so the 1st time it has run is now and so i don't know if the abs was functioning correctly before? I would guess it was as the guy that owned the car prior to me had everything done immediatly it needed it!gareth wrote:my ABS light has been on since putting the M30 in, but then i only noticed there wasn't a bulb fitted when i was fitting the m30 ecu in!
