yup drill the side facing away from the engine, vary the hole sizes and only try and only drill above the filter level (obviously but I've seen people who haven't).
Having said that a motorsport lecturer I once knew drove round for a fortnight with no airfilter at all, and noted it sounded wicked, he'd let some students loose on it in a practicle and well the rest is history. He was the same guy who taught the class how to turn up the boost on turbo diesel peugeots. Guess how many of them went out and bought diesel peugeots as a first car after that!

sounding dumb: drilling the airbox will allow more air in, but how will it make it sound better?

its to with the dynamics of airflow, it changes the path the air takes, and since sound is transmitted through vibrations in the air the holes change the tone and volume of the sound that is allready presant in your unmolested airbox.

think of a kids recorder.... (best example I can think of)
you blow through it and it plays a note, cover a hole on the recorder the note changes (but airflow is only negligably affected). well in the case of adding holes to your airbox your changing its base note by adding and not subtracting routes for the air to enter and/or escape (depending on engine load).

are you guys serious
drilling a hole above the air filter?
drilling holes is one thing
totally unfiltered air into you combustion chamber is another
i personally wouldn't do it
but hey
knock urself out!
maybe if they were tiny but even on the wholely unlucky event of somehow getting sdand into ur engine bay maybe driving past a site or road works
wouldnt you be fooked?

Yeah, I think he meant below the air filter to still get all the air through the filter.
I drilled Mini air boxes when I was a student, before I could afford a decent filter, it does change the noise, but I'd say not quite as much as a proper aftermaket filter.
But it's free!
