I've got rusty patches showing on my tailgate, at the bottom of two doors and starting to show on one sill.
They're not large and they certainly don't look to be full thickness - more of a discolouration at the moment than big old flakes, but I'm sure they'll end up a lot worse by the end of the winter if I don't sort it!

This is my current plan, please improve it if you can! My car is an alpinweiss touring.

1. Buy a Dremel (always wanted one and I'll use it for polishing my cam cover stripes once I've sorted the rusty bits).
2. Sand off the rust/bad paint back to good metal.
3. Hammerite (smooth white) on the bare metal
4. Get some touch up paint from the dealer to match.
5. Touch er up!
6. errr, thats it? Its not metallic, so I don't think I need laquer?

Any helpful comments (apart from "buy one without any rust on it") would be great :)

Don't use hammerite...it doesn't give a good keying surface for final coat and it's a b/stard to rub down!!Can't think of names but you can get undercoat/primer with rust inhibitor...prob best with one of those

Hi, been doing the same on my alpineweiss tourer strangely enough. Got some cans of paint from dealer and it didn't match due to age or whatever even though mine is 92 with bright paintwork. T-cut or polish a bit of paintwork to get the real colour and take it somewhere who'll match it is my advice. Lots of thin layers, fine wet and dry in between, leave it a week then t-cut it together with old paintwork and polish her up. At least this is my plan. My first go was rubbish, didn't use decent primer and rust is coming back.

Thanks!
so...scratch the hammerite...ok
Find a proper rust inhibiting undercoat
Find somewhere that can match paint. OK - bear in mind I have no spray gun and I'm guessing that you can't get aerosol paint matched. So, this'll be a brush effort - ok LOTS of wet and dry!

Time for the yellow pages :D

halfrauds cna match paint and i've heard good reports of this.

If your fuel flap is the same colour as the rest of the car then remove that after t-cutting it and take it in for them to scan (assuming that's how they do it)

Halfrauds touch up up kits have a fantastic Primer in it as well, really thick and sands back nice a smooth for top coats. I bought a little touch up brush of Kurust as well from Halfrauds. I like that stuff

P.s love your upbeat attitude about the dreaded tin worm... very unusual!

OK, I have followed the advice in the thread so far and splashed out for a dremel (took my time fondling various options in BnQ power tools section!) Halfords primer, and I'm going back in tommorow when they'll have my topcoat mixed up and in the can.

I had a look at the petrol cap and decided that I'd probably break it if I tried to get it off so I got the paint code off the suspension turret. Also the car is filthy and they didn't offer a matching service anyway....

I've used the dremel to sand off a patch of rust near the rear badge on the tailgate. Then I realised that I'm going to have to mask it off really carefully and I didn't get any tape so its sitting there a bit naked overnight, but I'm sure my trusty new dremel stylus will take any more surface rust off that forms overnight.

Luckily there is nice bright shiny metal underneath the rust so I'm not going to be plugging holes (on this bit at least!). I'm guessing that I should take off any thing that isn't shiny? Or should I treat the area with some rust inhibitor before I put the primer on?

Also the dremel came with some felt pads, can I use those instead of wet and dry or can anyone recommend an attachment that will leave me with the right surface for the topcoat?

This is fun!

I've been a busy boy today!
I started off looking at the bits that I could see and grinding them back. Then I realised that the plastic numberplate backing would probably come of quite easily and was also likely to be hiding more rust. So.. armed only with a screwdriver and an enquiring mind, I managed to get the lot off and only break one clip!
Then I got serious with a pan scrubber (sponge and scotchbright) and some fairy liquid to get the paint as clean as possible. I was surprised how good the paint was where it wasn't rusty... BMW must really lash out on paint.

Anyway, This is what it looked like before I got really stuck in with the Dremel. You can see a bit below the badge where I had been trying it out.

Image

I was going to take more photos but by the time I'd dremelled all that lot off, it was getting too dark!
I managed to get the badge off the back with a screwdriver. It wasn't stuck on with exhaust putty or double sided tape afterall, but had two prongs sticking into rubber grommets which looks like it'll go back on without any dramas.

Once I'd dremelled the lot back to smooth metal, there were some small black flecks of rust still embedded so I got them with some nasty green rust eating gunk from halfords and sanded the lot with some wet and dry. I have to admit that I only spent a few minutes sanding so I'm probably going to pay for this later. The trouble is, its Sunday night and its dark! Seeing as the car is parked on the street I really don't want it out there without a rear numberplate for too long.

Anyway, after I'd sanded, washed, and used those painting wipe things. I sprayed it with primer and I'm now waiting 15mins between primer coats. I've no idea what it'll look like since I'm spraying by the light of the streetlamp over the road. I guess I'll be spending a long time sanding during the week before I go near the top coat.. but at least the bugger isn't rusting anymore!

cheers for advice, all mistakes are my own

Keep us posted on this one please Morat, I am a total rookie and plan on doing mine once the weather picks up in the new year and I can afford to take it off the road for a few days (daily runner). Would be interested in knowing your progress, costs and also any lessons learned.

Cheers Mate

OK :)
Well, the view this morning wasn't great. the primer had gone on fine (thinner than I had expected tho) and the whole of the tailgate panel below the glass looked nice and even. The problem was that the car got covered in dew last night before the primer dried so some of the bare bits had already rusted through the primer!

Tonight I'm taking it round to a doorless car port type garage so I can spray it under some cover. I don't need serious rust removal again, its not bubbled or anything. So, it'll be wet and dry time then hopefully I'll get some more primer on and dry before the damp gets in again. I'll see if I can get a pic tonight but the camera I use doesn't like low light conditions very much.

Costs so far (from memory):
Dremel Stylus £60 from BnQ - Hard to justify on its own but such a cool little gadget. Amazing battery life too.
Dremel sanding thing/refills £4
Halfords Primer - large can £10
Halfords Alpinwiess - large can £10
Halfords rust eating gel £5.95
Halfords small paintbrush £1.50
Hand sanding sponge block £1.50
Halfords prep wipes £2 ?

lol, glad too see it's not only me that has this balancing act to play.

Really appreciate the updates Mate, following this one all the way, would love too see the end result as it's something I really fancy trying, but also something that I dread even starting.

Well, I'm afraid we're going to have to call a halt here...
I was talking to my (extremely) experienced workmate about the project and he looked at me with 50 odd years of wisdom and said I should just cover it in rust inhibitor and wait until the weather warms/dries up. After he'd explained it to me it became pretty clear that I was infact just going to end up chasing the error as I sprayed in damp conditions and constantly working to undo what I'd just done. Some daylight wouldn't go amiss either.

SO

I really wanted to see what some top-coat would look like so I stuck a single layer on the visible parts of the tailgate. It started raining about 10 minutes later so I'm not going to say that the paint looks great. There didn't seem to be much point in sanding and spraying a second coat so I left it as it is.

I guess you could call the project a failure since I've spunked about £100 on materials and haven't achieved a satisfactory finish. Personally I'm pretty chuffed because firstly, my tailgate isn't getting any rustier - and I was starting to get very scared about rust on this car. Secondly, I've still got all the materials to do the job much better when I've got more time, sunshine and a bit of cover - and even though the car now looks like its been sprayed by a total amateur at least it doesn't have rust patches on its tailgate anymore!!

finally, here are the results:

You can see where I masked the badge off with tape, I reckon a good polishing would sort the ridge. The match isn't great, but not bad for £10 paint IMO.

Image

and here you can see the bit under the badge that I had already dremelled in the first photo in the thread. Originally it looked like one of the nasty rust splodges under the numberplate.

Image

It ain't pretty, but its an improvement - and I'll do it better next time!

btw, those photos were taken after driving to work, so the grit and stuff is honest road dirt, not embedded in the paint!
