right my m30 is getting worse at starting on a daily basis since last week

turn the key from stone cold and its starts like a bag of bolts and needs a lot of pedal to get it initially started.

once started it runs as if its missing on one or two cylinders. give it a rev and it almost dies but manages to get the revs back up by itself and then goes back to poor idling.

when it gets the temperature up it idles reasonably well but still not as good as i would expect. if i rev it quickly ( 1 blip of the throttle quite wide open) it stutters and then revs up, if i rev it very slowly it seems smooth enough. this makes pulling away from junctions etc a pain as i need to blip it and wait for it to catch up and then pull away.

things that ive done today to attempt to cure it:

1) plugs out, inspected and re-gapped
2)throttle butterfly cleaned and checked for operation.
3) dizzy/rotor inspected and cleaned (as much as possible cos it wont come out with radiator in)
4)leads checked for damage but ive not been able to get my fluke on them yet.
5)had a brief look at afm but didnt really want to mess with it too much.
6) took idle air valve out for a nosey in it....i was able to push the bit of metal inside around with a screwdriver to open or close the hole....is that right? it had no resistance to movement at all
7)blue temp sensor was changed last month with no immediate difference to running or the CO reading for its MOT...still very high at 3.26

all of the above made it start very slightly better but is still very poor.

also dont know what the sensor screwed into the head above number 6 injector is for...never noticed it before today....whats it for?

any help much appreciated chaps :D
