ive found my water pump, and managed to remove the foru bolts that hold it in place, but it still wont come out.Do i need to remove the big nut from just behind the fan to free it,or is it just a big hammer job?

If it's like the IS then if you look you will find extra holes that appear to do nothing but actually they are threaded! You have to put a nut in and turn it, as the nut hits the side of the engine if you keep turning it will pull/drag the water pump out.

If we didn't notice these holes were threaded we could have spent hours trying to figure it out.

Assuming this is a four pot?
The extra threaded holes are to screw a couple of bolts in as an extractor, as above, but be very careful. The lugs break off very easily. You need to put a bit of tension on the bolts, then tap the pump. A bit more tension, then tap again, ans so on.

Any idea what to do if the lugs do break off? :?

I'm in the process of changing my water pump, but both the extraction lugs broke off when I tried to use them :(

I'd improvise something using the gear puller from my Sykes-Pickavant 10 tonne puller, a couple of bits of threaded rod and some nuts.
