Hello people, can anyone tell me how much work & money it will cost to put in an E36 3.0 M3 engine in a 325i Sport?
Regards, BJ.

A big part of the answer will be how much you source the donor engine for. An even bigger part will be down to who is doing the labour.BIGJO wrote:Hello people, can anyone tell me how much work & money it will cost to put in an E36 3.0 M3 engine in a 325i Sport?

Buy donor vehicles at the right price, and by the time you sold off the spare bits, you can return a small profit.
For how much work is involved - check the archives. All the problems and their solutions have been covered many times.

If I was to source the engine & gearbox, would fitting the engine require any body work in the engine bay? I'm assuming it's not as simple as swapping over the lumps etc...

The engine and box fits straight in using a variety of standard BMW parts from other models. The problems arise from the exhaust system, engine mount and steering shaft all trying to occupy the same space, and similarly with the inlet manifold and brake servo on the other side. All these problems are solvable by various means.

How much do you think it'd cost (labour) to complete the conversion? Is it worth doing do you feel?

There's a zoner called Henry with an e36 m3 lump in his e30 m3. Pukka job. If you want to see pics, think I posted them in the June Dorset meet pages, in the meets pics and vids section.

Paying someone to do the work will cost big. Ive seen people wanting anything from £5k to £9k and some of those quotes didnt include partsBIGJO wrote:How much do you think it'd cost (labour) to complete the conversion? Is it worth doing do you feel?
The problem with paying someone is the fab work thats needed for the exhaust manifold etc, and with conversion work like this, you get what you pay for.
As to if its worth doing - if you plan to keep the car, yes. If you plan to do the conversion and then sell it, no - you just wouldnt get your money back.
As Brian said, the engine and 5spd box fits straight in (with the correct sump) but custom work is needed for the inlet and exhaust. No body mods are needed, but you are right in saying it's not as simple as swapping over the lumps etc
Do a search for both S50 and M50 conversions and that should show you the number of threads on here with all the info you need.

i payed £2600 for my cosworth conversion which was for labour only as i supplied all parts, and that wasnt much over the original £2500 quoted.my last conversion was quoted £4400 all in but ended up £5500.it will cost thousands however you do it and then you will need to think about upgrading brakes/suspension etc after that
